I grew up in a small town in Upstate New York.  And while this town was small, there are still parts of it that I still talk about today.

Not just school.  Not just softball.  Not just my friends.

But places I used to go.  Even small towns have malls…and as a teenager, I spent a lot of time at the Arnot Mall in Big Flats, New York.  However…my most favorite place to go was what we locals referred to as “The Old Barn.”  However, when this old barn was transformed into an ice cream shop, it became known as The Dairy Barn.

I spent so many spring and summer days eating ice cream off a cone.  Usually I got a small chocolate/vanilla twist.  Or the Dole Whip in a cone.  Sometimes I’d get it dipped in chocolate or cherry topping.  Sometimes I was allowed to have sprinkles.  And on some rare occasions, I was able to pick from the hard ice cream flavors and have a really special treat.

When I went up to Utica, New York to run in a road race, Cathy and Jenn, my travel compatriots and two of my biggest race support crew, indulged me by allowing a rather big detour down through the Big Flats area.  I had let those in the area know that I was going to be in town, briefly, on Sunday afternoon…and that should they want to get together…I would be hitting up The Dairy Barn.

Yes…this lactose intolerant girl was going to indulge in some ice cream.  And why not?  Ice cream is usually how I round off a race day anyway.  This was no different…just somewhere else.

I can’t really write up a review of The Dairy Barn in Horseheads, NY.  They are not like my local ice cream shop or Jeni’s up in Columbus, Ohio…meaning they don’t make their own ice cream.  They do serve up Perry’s Ice Cream, however.  Perry’s Ice Cream is native to Upstate New York…so at least it is somewhat local!  So, I do give them that.  The Dairy Barn can make up different sundaes (including banana splits…and I was tempted!) in addition to their regular ice cream in a cone or cup.

With my friends all assembled, we placed our orders.  And there were definitely some fun flavors to choose from.  I appreciated that The Dairy Barn had out their allergen list of all the flavors they were serving.  This took a lot of guess work out and also meant that I could go with some of the hard ice cream instead of the Dole Whip, should I so choose.  And so…that’s what I did.

Now, these flavors are definitely fun and delicious.  Jenn went for the flavor called Piece of Cake, which is light yellow cake ice cream with chocolate flavored frosting swirls and pound cake pieces inside.  Cathy went with a unique flavor she had never seen before.  It was definitely one of the more interesting sounding ones…being that it was popcorn flavored ice cream with sea salt caramel swirls and caramel truffles.  My friend Karen got the same kind.  As for me…I originally was going to get a flavor called Fools Gold (peanut butter ice cream with peanut butter candy swirls and chocolate coated toffee pieces), but changed my mind after spotting one called White Lightning.  White Lightning is dark chocolate ice cream with streaks of thick mint flavored white fudge lightning.  And it was AMAZING!  Rich dark chocolate with yummy fudge throughout it.  It was two of my favorite things all packed into a giant “small” scoop.  Mint.  Dark Chocolate.  Heaven.  I let it just melt away on my tongue and took my time to eat it…loving and indulging in every sinful spoonful.

If the ice cream shop isn’t making their own ice cream, I give them props for choosing a company that is based out of Upstate New York and quite regional.  Loved every bite of my ice cream.  And at The Dairy Barn, they don’t skimp on portions either.  All of us got a cup of our ice cream of choice, and it was a big scoop of ice cream…probably 2 servings packed in.  I didn’t care.  I was going to devour every bit of it.  And each cup of ice cream was very affordable too.  That large serving of delicious Perry’s ice cream ran us $2.50 each.  Can’t beat that.  And that was for the “small” size.  I can’t imagine what the large size would be.

But the best part of this journey was getting reacquainted with people I hadn’t seen in years.  It was way too short of a time, but I enjoyed every moment with Jenn, Karen, and Shannon…who I hadn’t seen in 15 years…since graduating high school.  No one really has changed.  We all are still goofy, still having fun, and still enjoying life.  And we all got to do it together…for about 45 minutes…over ice cream.

If you find yourself passing through the Horseheads/Big Flats area…swing by The Dairy Barn and grab a scoop of ice cream.  Try out a flavor you may not see anywhere else.  Go with family.  Go with friends.  Indulge.  Do it with a smile.  And know that The Dairy Barn keeps a list of all allergen information for all of their flavors at the counter.  So do so with a sound mind.

And if you happen to be returning to the area…get together with friends.  Friendship, smiles, laughter and ice cream.  That’s what these days are all about.

When you think Cookies & Cream ice cream, what do you envision?  For me…it’s a rich and creamy vanilla base that is filled with chunks of cookies.  So, when I saw that Arctic Zero offered a frozen treat that was labeled Cookies & Cream, you better believe I got all excited about it.

While I tried and enjoyed the Chocolate Peanut Butter frozen dessert from Arctic Zero well enough…I mentioned that it seemed to be lacking a lot of the peanut butter flavor.  And trust me…when you buy something that has the words PEANUT BUTTER listed, you want to be able to taste peanut butter.

Well, the same concept sort of holds true for something that is called Cookies & Cream.  You just sort of expect to get cookies with your ice cream, right?  EXACTLY!!

And that’s exactly what I immediately noticed was missing when I opened up this pint of the Arctic Zero Frozen Dessert I picked up at Whole Foods not too long ago.  I mean…a gluten-free ice cream-like dessert that involved COOKIES??!!  I was sold.  And tonight, after a quick dinner, this was going to be dessert.  I hurried into the kitchen to open the pint, which I let sit on the counter while my roommate and I ate because I discovered that lactose-free desserts do better when they are left to soften a little.  I popped off the lid…and was staring at this gray-brown Italian ice-like substance.  Given that I had eaten a flavor of Arctic Zero before, I was expecting the sorbet-like look.  I wasn’t expecting the brown-gray color.  And…AND…there was NO sign of anything cookie-like scattered throughout it.

I was totally bummed.

But, I figured maybe it was supposed to just taste like cookies and cream, in which case…the picture on the front is very misleading.  That being said, I scooped up a 1/2 cup serving for my roommate and handed her a bowl, then went to scoop mine.  She gave it a taste…and said that…it didn’t taste like cookies and cream.  It almost tasted…caramel-like.

I finished scooping up my serving and put the pint back into the freeze.  Then, I settled in and took my first taste.  She was absolutely right.  So, not only did I not have any cookies in my Cookies & Cream dessert…it tasted like caramel.  Not cookies.  Not cream.  Caramel.  Now, I like caramel…but not when I want cookies and cream.  FOR REAL!!  False advertising.

This was a serious let-down for me.  It totally bummed me out on every level I could think of.  I’m still upset about it.  I could have forgiven them for the lack of cookies, but I can’t forgive them for getting the flavor wrong.  This is NOT cookies and cream.  This is…a disappointing let-down.  Not what I wanted.  Not what I was told I was getting.

Now, speaking nutrition-wise…the Arctic Zero Cookies & Cream Frozen Dessert is gluten-free and safe for the lactose intolerant.  The entire pint will only serve you up 150 calories.  But a regular serving, which is 1/2 cup, is only 36 calories and is fat free.  In addition, one serving has only 80 mg sodium, 10 mg cholesterol, and 5 grams of sugar.  Finally, one serving of the Cookies & Cream Frozen Dessert from Arctic Zero gives you 2 grams of fiber and 3 grams of protein.

As far as ingredients go…well…I can see how it would be best not to skip to these low-calorie substitutions.  All the ingredients are, as listed: purified water, whey protein concentrate (milk), organic cane sugar, chicory root, sugarcane fiber, dutch processed cocoa powder with alkali, guar gum, xanthan gum, natural flavors, organic vanilla, sea salt, and monk fruit concentrate.

Definitely not the cleanest nor the best when it comes to ingredients.  And this is not a vegan treat as it does contain whey protein.  Just a warning.

For me…on this the second flavor I have tried from Arctic Zero…I’m beginning to see a trend…and I’m saying don’t waste your $5 on this.  Go for something delicious that you know you’ll like.  Be it real ice cream…or something offered from So Delicious or other non-dairy offerings that are SUPER delicious.  This…is just not worth it.

For the past few months, I have been giving googly eyes to my grocer’s freezer.  Why?  Well…other than my love of ice cream and all things frozen, I had come across a brand called Arctic Zero . What makes Arctic Zero so…interesting?

Well, for those of you who may never have run across these pints, these ice creams contain less than 150 calories in the ENTIRE pint of ice cream.  Which means, indulging doesn’t feel as guilt-ridden and laden with sin, right?  Of course.  Also is the fact that all of their flavors are gluten-free, fat-free and suitable for the lactose intolerant.  Loving this even more.  You also won’t find chemicals in these pints, for they are made with only organic and natural ingredients.  An entire pint provides 8 grams of fiber as well.  Oh…and these have no sugar alcohols in them, so they are suitable for children and adults.  And to top it all off…kosher and non-GMO!

Love at first sight.

But what about first bite?

That was what I was going to figure out.

The difficult part was deciding which one to start with.  But, finally, I decided to go with two of my most favorite things in the world: chocolate and peanut butter.

The Arctic Zero Chocolate Peanut Butter Frozen Dessert is not going to be the rich and creamy ice cream that you find in stores.  In fact, it’s definitely more like a sorbet in texture.  So, if you are going into this expecting rich, creamy goodness…look for regular ice cream.  But…if you’re okay with sorbet, and I am…this is really really good.  I wasn’t actually expecting the sorbet texture, so when I was trying to scoop it into a gluten-free ice cream cone, I was a little bit surprised, but everything frozen goes good in an ice cream cone!  I got my roomie situated with hers first and I was dishing up my own dessert, I saw her giving hers a taste.  I asked how it was…and she liked it.

I settled in with my own gluten-free ice cream cone and took my own taste.  Chocolate.  That’s what hit me first.  And that’s what hit me most.  In fact, I can barely make out the traces of peanut butter flavor in this, which is disappointing because I LOVE peanut butter.  I was expecting something that would taste like an amazing peanut butter cup.  The frozen dessert itself is definitely good.  But…you might as well just call it chocolate because the peanut butter is really hard to find in the flavors.  Other than that…this was highly impressive on the frozen treat standards.  It wasn’t too rich.  It wasn’t filling either.  And, with a serving only dishing up just over 30 calories (for 1/2 cup), you can’t argue that this is a guilt-free treat indeed.  And it does have great taste.  Just wish the peanut butter was more in the forefront of the flavor on this one.

I also highly recommend that you let the pint sit out on the counter for at least 15 minutes to let it thaw out some.  Otherwise it is really difficult to scoop.  Letting it soften up a bit worked very well and I did this just out of being a lactose-free ice cream freak and knowing that they usually have to sit out in order to be able to scoop them.  No big deal.  It thawed a bit while I ate dinner.  And by the time dishes were done, it was ready to be put in the gluten-free ice cream cone.  Delicious!!

Let’s talk ingredients!  All of the chocolate based ones, like the Chocolate Peanut Butter Frozen Dessert, from Arctic Zero are composed of purified water, whey protein concentrate, organic cane sugar, chicory root, dutch processed cocoa powder with alkali, guar gum, xanthan gum, natural flavors, sea salt, and monk fruit concentrate.  This one also includes the addition of peanut butter!

Nutritionally speaking, a 1/2 cup serving of Arctic Zero Chocolate Peanut Butter Frozen Dessert will provide you with 37 calories and 0 grams of fat.  Yep.  Fat-free!  Each serving only contains 80 mg of sodium, 2 grams of fiber, and 3.4 grams of protein.  So, you really don’t feel too guilty if you end up sitting down and indulging in the entire pint.  We showed restraint and kept it to a serving (or less) as I was filling up gluten-free ice cream cones.

I’m impressed with Arctic Zero.  These were much better than I anticipated.  Which is good…because I have two additional flavors in my freezer already.  I think the only fault I find with the Chocolate Peanut Butter flavor is that the peanut butter flavor almost seemed lost in the rest of it.  It was there…but just a hint of it every now and again.  But I’m looking forward to seeing how the Mint Chocolate Cookie and Cookies and Cream stack up!

TOTAL WOW.  TOTAL YUM!  ZERO GUILT!

I think I need to get the roomie to indulge in beer flights more often…especially just before we hit up Whole Foods.  Because when the roomie gets tipsy…the grocery budget gets a little bigger.  Mostly because I find stuff I’ve been wanting to try…but know the budget won’t handle it.  When the Tipsy Wonder is feeling the after affects of a beer flight with dinner, well…suddenly I start getting gluten-free gifts.  Yes…this needs to become a tradition.

Why am I relaying this little anecdote?  Well…because this happened on Friday night.  And as a result, I ended up with quite a few bits of goodness in my freezer, pantry, and refrigerator.  One of my new Thinking Outside The Gluten-Free Budget Because Someone Had A Beer Flight™ purchases happened to be a pint of Pure Gourmet Apple Pie Gelato.

Pure Gourmet was created by Philadelphia natives, Andrea Perrier, Kelly MacLeod, and Michael MacLeod.  The three of them all shared a love for everything natural and gourmet.  That’s why they launched their first line of sorbets, using natural, healthy ingredients.  Soon after, they launched a line of gelato.  Pure Gourmet’s entire concept is built upon the founder’s passion for enjoying pure foods with naturally bold and intense flavor.   And all of their products are gluten-free and kosher.  Loving it.

So…out of all the flavors to choose from…I grabbed the Apple Pie Gelato.  Why?  Because it was on closeout.  Whole Foods was getting rid of that flavor.  Which meant, the other gelato flavors and the sorbets would still be there.  But not this one.  Not for much longer.  And that is how it beat out the Chocolate Caramel Sorbet.  Honestly.

Tonight, the power went out (which means I took pictures of the product by the light of my oil lamp…so they are a bit dark…so sorry!).  We had some huge storms sweep through the area and I had, thankfully, just finished toasting up my gluten-free veggie quesadilla when the lights went out.  I was hoping they wouldn’t be out too long…but alas…my roommate and I managed to eat our dinner in the dark and there was no sign of the power returning yet.  In fact, the storm was still raging outside.  So…dishes and then dessert would have to be prepared in the dark.

Dessert was something I had been thinking about all day.  I tend to think about food a lot.  We had been working on a container of Udi’s Gluten-Free Snickerdoodles, but only one serving (2 cookies) remained.  So I came up with the idea of Gluten-Free Snickerdoodles A La Mode.  For real.  Each of us got one of the remaining cookies in the bottom of the bowl.  Then, one small scoop of the Pure Gourmet Apple Pie Gelato and a sprinkling of the cookie crumbs from the bottom of the container and…BAM…easy dessert.

I passed off a bowl to my roommate and went to tuck the gelato back in the freezer, which would remain closed until the return of the power.  She dove in immediately and all I heard was, “The gelato is sooooooo goooooood!”

Happy squee time.  But I had to find out for myself.  I settled in on the couch.  The first thing my spoon touched was that gelato.  I wanted to see for myself.

She was so right.  It tasted like a frozen apple pie.  But…creamy and rich and smooth.  I loved the apple flavor.  And pairing it with a gluten-free snickerdoodle was an amazing combination.  It was like having a cinnamon crust on a delicious apple pie.  Honestly.  And the sprinkling of cinnamon and sugar over the top just gave it that extra little bit.  However, this gelato is crazy-good on its own.  Trust me.  I tried it without any embellishments as well.  You can really taste every flavor in this gelato.  And it has the perfect consistency too.  Creamy and dreamy.  Apple pie…taken to the next level.  It definitely satisfied the ice cream lover in me.  I wish my Whole Foods wasn’t going to stop carrying this variety.  It is fresh apple pie meats gourmet ice cream good.  Apple pie a la mode…in just the a la mode part.  SO good!

Nutritionally speaking, this is gelato…so understand that it’s a dessert.  A treat.  Treat it as one.  Don’t overindulge.  Do NOT…I repeat…DO NOT sit down and eat the entire pint in one sitting.  I always measure out or weigh my servings so I know exactly how much I am eating.  I am very, very good about sticking to the portion-size.  And I do everything to make sure this is always the case.

That being said, a serving of Pure Gourmet Foods Apple Pie Gelato is 1/2 cup (or if you prefer to weigh food, like I do…102 grams).  This serving will contain a cold helping of 210 calories and 10 grams of fat.  This gelato has 21 grams of sugar, 70 mg of sodium, 40 mg cholesterol, 1 gram of fiber, and 4 grams of protein.  Remember…this is a treat.  You should never feel bad about having dessert.  Just plan accordingly.

And as far as ingredients go, this gelato is not only gluten-free but also kosher.  It is made from milk, cream, sugar, evaporated apples, glucose, nonfat dry milk, whey, natural green apple flavor, cinnamon, guar gum, lotus bean gum, and carrageenan.  So…I recognize most of those.  I had to look up what carrageenan was…and for those of you who want to know, it is a member of the linear sulfated polysaccarides that are extracted from red seaweeds and used throughout the food industry for their gelling, thickening and stabilizing properties.  These are most often used in dairy and meat products due to their strong binding to food proteins.

Good to know.

I guess.

Anyway…if you haven’t found this yet in your grocer’s freezer…and you love gelato…I highly recommend Pure Gourmet.  It is delicious and the perfect compliment to any meal.  And I highly recommend the Apple Pie Gelato…should you be able to find it.  If not, talk to customer service and see if they can order it for you.  Trust me…you’ll want to devour this.

A food truck ruckus in order with Louisville’s gluten-free Sweet ‘N Savory crepe truck

Food trucks are amazing things.  They are just so…cool!  Let’s face it…street food is huge right now, and thankfully, Louisville, Kentucky is quite the foodie town these days.  One of the best things to come of this…have been the growth of the food truck presence in this city.

A year ago, I attended the Food Truckus Ruckus…and sadly couldn’t eat anything offered because there was nothing for a gluten-free vegetarian.  I was bummed out and ended up with grocery store sushi.  Not what I wanted…but it worked for the time.  I was hungry and needed some form of sustenance.  And since the food trucks couldn’t help me out, I had to turn to the next best thing…on the go…

And so…to be fair…my roommate never mentioned food trucks again.

The next peep about food trucks came…from me!

Because, thanks to a post from the local allergen-free bakery, Annie May’s Sweet Café, on their Facebook, I discovered that there was a new food truck in town.  And this time…it was geared toward people like me!

Enter to the Louisville street food scene…Sweet ‘N Savory.

Sweet ‘N Savory is a local food truck that offers gluten-free crepes (pardon me while I shad a few tears of absolute JOY!), Carpe Diem Smoothies, gelato, coffee, hot chocolate, and tea!  All of their crepes are gluten-free and dairy-free, made with local, free-range eggs.  Their ingredients also incorporate as much local meats, cheese, fruits, and vegetables as possible.  You gotta love a local business that tries to keep it all local as well.  I appreciate that sort of care with ingredients and pride in the products that come out of this area.

Friday evening, after getting off work, my roommate and I had plans.  And they involved food trucks.  From Sweet ‘N Savory’s Facebook page, I learned of an event that that they were attending, along with other food trucks.  It was the Louisville Street Food Alliance and they were putting on the LSFA Rocks Your Friday Night! event at Apocalypse Brew Works in Louisville, featuring seven of Louisville’s best food trucks: Lil Cheezers, Holy Mole, Grind, French Indo Canada, Bluegrass Brick Oven Pizza, Johnny’s Diner Car, and, of course, Sweet ‘N Savory.  These food trucks all have their specialty types of food and it sounded like a great event.  So, following a day at the office…my roomie and I set out across the river to hit up Louisville for dinner that night.  She had her eye on a grilled cheese from Lil Cheezers, the Legalize Marinara (Pepperoni, Mozzarella, Sliced Tomatoes with a touch of Garlic), FYI, with a side of sweet potato fries and curried ketchup ($8.00) with a soda for a drink ($1.00).

However, I finally got to enjoy the Louisville street food scene now too.  I immediately bounded over to Sweet ‘N Savory, inquiring if they were serving yet.  We had no traffic on the bridge and got their quicker than anticipated.  They were, so after eyeing the menu for a little bit…I decided to have dessert for dinner…opting for a sweet crepe.  My choice?  The Nutty Banana Crepe ($5.00), which is sliced bananas smothered in Nutella, wrapped up beautifully in a delicate crepe.  To accompany that on a very chilly and windy April evening, I got a small cup of hot tea ($1.25).  The best part was…I got to stand right there and watch it all get made.

First of all, my tea order sort of blew a fuse in the truck.  Whoops.  So, while they attempted to figure that out, truck owners Ricky Giannini and Ashley Giannini got my crepe working.  Ricky was on crepe duty.  I watched him pour the batter and spread it around to cook.  Then, with great precision, he folded it over, added the banana, then poured over delicious Nutella.  As he was letting it finish, he joked with me about the sweet crepe spoiling my dinner.  I told him it was my dinner.  The dinner of champions!  I mean…banana and sinful Nutella…oh yes.  That can be dinner any night for me.

He laughed.  And I watched as he folded the crepe the rest of the way, dusted it with powdered sugar, and then plated it for me.  They said they would bring me the tea as soon as they could figure out their generator.  That was fine.  I was holding a very warm and fresh Nutty Banana Crepe at the moment…and I was ready to dig into it and devour.

The last time I had a gluten-free crepe, I was in Denver, Colorado.  It was the only other place I have ever found them…and it means I often crave but can do nothing about it, until my annual pilgrimage to Denver.  Not so anymore.  And let me tell you…I am in love with this food truck.  Absolute love.

The crepe was light and delicious…a thin pancake surrounding an amazing filling.  I mean, I am not only a Nutella fan, but huge on banana as well.  And Sweet ‘N Savory doesn’t skimp on either.  This crepe was busting with it.  I loved the play of the banana with the sweetness of the Nutella and the crepe itself.  Add to it the dusting of powdered sugar…and dinner was epic and sweet!!  I was in love with every bite.  I did share one bit with my roommate, because she had to try it herself…and she agreed…AWESOME!

My tea arrived just as I polished off the crepe…perfect timing.

Thanks to food trucks making a surge here in Louisville, I have become quite proud of the foodie status this city had received.  But, now, thanks to Sweet ‘N Savory…I can indulge in the street food scene as well.  And for that…I am forever grateful.

I’m already looking forward to the next time I get to eat from their truck.  I think I might give a savory crepe a try.  I’m already eying their Caprese Crepe.

Next time can’t get here soon enough.

Gluten-Free Dining at Disney World

For the first time in my life…I was excited to be heading to Disney.  Yes…I’m in my thirties.  No…I’ve never been to a Disney park.  No Disneyland.  No Disney World.  My family could never afford to go when I was growing up…so that was one thing many of my friends had done that I hadn’t yet achieved.  It was certainly on my bucket list, and from what I had been told…I’d enjoy it more now that I was older anyway.

That being the case…the perfect opportunity to go there arose with the Disney Princess Half Marathon.  Originally, I was going to run this one in 2012, but I didn’t have the money for it.  So, the moment registration opened for the 2013 Disney Princess Half Marathon, you better believe I was registered and ready to run.  The way I figured it…if I went ahead and registered, I couldn’t talk myself out of it due to financial reasons.  No looking back.  I signed up the minute registration was opened…and I was locked in.

Trust me…I do not travel without doing some research as to what I might be able to eat.  Thankfully, Disney World is pretty much the #1 go-to vacation spot if you have food allergies…especially Celiac or gluten intolerance.  Trust me.  I was expecting to have to eat many a Go Picnic meal while on vacation, but I only had to break into one of the little packs I brought…and that was at the Atlanta airport on the way home.  That definitely speaks very highly of the park and of Disney.

So…here I go with yet another combination blog about my amazing dining experiences while at Disney World.  I wanted to be particularly safe in my food choices being that I was there to run a half marathon and being glutenized while on vacation sucks enough…but being glutenized before running 13.1 miles sucks even more.

Safety was key…and I never felt as if I were in any danger of becoming sick at any dining establishment where my roommate and I chose to dine.

I suppose the best place to start…is at the beginning of the trip…

What better way to experience Animal Kingdom, our first park of choice, than by eating at the Animal Kingdom Lodge that night for dinner.  What really added to the ambiance of this particular dining attraction was that you could literally gaze out of the window and see exotic animals roaming around the Sunset Savanna as you eat.  The cuisine is African-inspired with Indian flavored.  Mmmm…I totally dig Indian food.

My roommate and I arrived about 15 minutes ahead of our reservation.  As we checked in, the hostess said that she saw that there was one person in the party with a gluten allergy.  I nodded and said that it was me.  She handed us our little pager thingy and we took a seat to wait for our table.  Despite arriving early, we were taken back as soon as something opened up…which was just before our reservation time anyway.

amazing feel of the restaurant itself.  And, once seated, our waiter came over to the table to get our drink order and talk about some specials.  I went ahead and ordered a hot tea to go with my dinner, settling on the Hazelnut Rooibos tea ($6.29) with some water.

As he was going over some of the favorites on the menu, he noted that I had the gluten-free menu in front of me and said that a chef would be out to talk to me specifically about the menu, but that if anything on the regular menu looked like it had gluten in it…it was not on mine.  Just as he was starting to go over the gluten-free bread option should I want to do the Indian-style bread service, which means I get poppadoms instead of the traditional bread, the chef, Jake, came out to speak to me about the menu.

Chef Jake really did a lot to put my mind to ease.  Not only did he promise to watch my ticket carefully as it was prepared, he also went over the poppadoms that I could use for the Indian-style bread service, should I choose to do that.  He went over which sauces/chutneys would be okay with that (they were listed on the menu) and said that I could put my mind to ease…as they would take good care of me.  I thanked him for his time and he returned to the kitchen, leaving us once again in the capable hands of our server, Chris.

With a little bit of time to decide on what we wanted, my roommate and I placed our orders.  Cathy decided on the Chicken Tandoori Pilaf ($17.99).  As for me…the Sanaa Vegetarian Sampler ($14.99) sounded awesome.  I was able to choose two of the five vegetarian dishes and have them served with basmati rice.  I was able to choose between Paneer Tikka; Stewed Lentils; Spicy Peas, Chickpeas, and Potatoes; Mixed Seasonal Greens and Tomatoes; Vindaloo-style Vegetables.  I knew for certain I wanted the Vindaloo-style Vegetables, so the difficult part was deciding what the other choice would be.  After a little back and forth, I chose the Stewed Lentils as my second option.

Chris went to put in the order and I left my fate in the hands of Chef Jake and his knowledgeable kitchen staff.

Food arrived at our table and I couldn’t wait to try it out.  It looked fantastic.  Three bowls were placed before me.  The middle one held the basmati rice, the one on the left had my tewed lentils, and the one on the right had the vindaloo-style vegetables.  It smelled fantastic and I couldn’t wait to dig in.

The basmati rice was perfect with each of these dishes…for one thing.  And the rice was cooked to perfection and lightly flavored, so as not to take away from the dishes that accompanied it.  I started with the Vindaloo-style Vegetables.  This dish included a blend of okra, tomatoes, green beans, cauliflower and onion.  It wasn’t packed with flavor…as I was expecting a bit of a spice to accompany it.  But, that being said, it wasn’t lacking either.  I thought this was going to be the highlight of my sampler…but it was slightly too mild for me and definitely not as full of flavor as I anticipated.  That being said, it did taste good.  I just was familiar with my last vegetarian vindaloo experience where I had a lot of heat in each bite.  This wasn’t at all bad…it just wasn’t as fantastic as I had built it up in my mind.

The stewed lentils, however, are another story.  These golden lentils were not only packed with protein (me and my protein!), but also seasoned to perfection.  They were creamy and had a hint of spice to them that I enjoyed.  I dished some rice into them and it was a perfect combination when mixed together.  I loved the texture and taste of these lentils.  Nothing grainy…nothing too bland.  Perfection.  These thrilled me.

Despite being full, Chris talked my roommate and I into dessert.  As we were both rather full, we decided to split something.  And the dessert menu at Sanaa was not lacking as far as gluten-free options went.  As we were splitting, Cathy and I chose to try our waiter’s suggestion, the Banana Kulfi Sundae ($5.49), which he described as a banana split without the banana.  Well, I was totally sold!

The dessert was brilliant.  A cube of banana flavored kulfi (which is sweetened condensed milk and evaporated milk that is flavored) is served with a wedge of dried pineapple, warm chocolate sauce, strawberries, a dollop of whipped cream, and spiced cashews.  Kulfi is a bit denser than ice cream and actually takes longer to melt.  Pretty awesome.  And the dessert…was fantastic.  Amazingly tasty.  I especially loved the strawberries that came on the side.  I tried to mix as many of the components together for a bite and it was magical.  I suggest to anyone dining at Sanaa they save room for dessert and give the Banana Kulfi Sundae a try.  Trust me…it was worth the extra money and indulgence.

Sanaa was certainly a good way to kick off my week at Disney World.  I was put to total ease from the moment I checked in and never felt like I needed to second guess any of the food placed in front of me.  Total win.

Well, by now, you know how it is when a pub is in the vicinity with my roommate and I.  We definitely love our pub grub.  She definitely always has more of a selection because being gluten-free at a pub is definitely not easy and being a vegetarian on top of it…even more difficult.  But, I still love the atmosphere of Irish pubs and we chose this one specifically because of how it was rated with gluten-free fare.  Raglan Road Irish Pub and Restaurant is located in the bustling, busy, crowded Downtown Disney.

Let me preface this by saying that of all the places I ate at Disney World…this one was my least favorite.  There were options on the menu for me…many dishes being labeled as having a gluten-free version of it (and yes…this included the fish and chips).  So, that was very calming for me as far as menu choices went.  The thing was…beyond a salad, there wasn’t too much for a vegetarian to have…aside from the Raglan Risotto…which I almost settled on.  The server said I could also enjoy the Portobello Beauty Sandwich without the bread.  But…with all that being said…I decided to stick with something I could pretty much guarantee wouldn’t make me sick.

Let it be known, Cathy cannot enter a pub without getting the Fish and Chips ($19.00) which she always gets with a drink, and since they had Magners ($7.00 – and it’s gluten-free) on tap…she was definitely one happy girl.

I decided to stick with water for my beverage and finally settled on one of the salads on the menu that was vegetarian and gluten-free.  My choice…the Vroom Salad ($12.00) with a helping of some gluten-free carbs…a side of their fries (or chips as they say in Ireland) ($5.00), which would be prepared gluten-free for me.

Dinner arrived at our table.  My roommate loved how her fish and chips were served traditionally…wrapped in paper and poured out onto her plate.  She loved the tartar sauce that came with it.  She did enjoy the fish, but the chips lacked.

As for me…the Vroom Salad intrigued me right away.  The Vroom Salad is made up of gluten-free quinoa grains with cider vinegar marinated

beans, sweet and sour carrots, watercress, and served with a honey mustard dressing.  It was presented in the center of a plate in a pile, which I totally destroyed with my fork to scatter things about the plate and mix with the dressing.

As far as a salad goes…this one was actually one of the better offerings I have had at a pub.  The addition of the quinoa was a fantastic protein-packed addition to the usual greens and vegetables that I get stuck with at such establishments.  The flavors from the beans and carrots only heightened the flavor of the salad.  I felt they were a little heavy-handed with the watercress, but it added a nice green throughout the salad, once I mixed it up.  The watercress was the most unwieldy part of this salad.  It was the best part of this meal.

That being said…my roommate and I were more than disappointed with the chips.  These fries were mostly soggy and lacking that firm crunch I love on the outside of fries.  I don’t get to eat fries out much, so I was looking forward to these.  And they were a huge disappointment in the end.  I ate more of them than I intended, but as I was paying for them…it seemed like I had to put some effort into it.

Would I go back to Raglan Road on a follow-up visit?  Not likely.  Which is too bad…because I do love pubs.

No dessert…instead my roommate and I hit up Downtown Disney Babycakes NYC bakery for a gluten-free cookie sandwich.  My favorite thing I ate all night.  But I’ll get to Downtown Disney’s brach of Babcakes NYC soon enough…

With all the food options available at Epcot…there was very little around the park that I could actually eat.  Today was the day before the race and I needed to be very sure about the food I consumed.  One bit of cross contamination could be disastrous for me and my race that I paid so much to run and trained hard for in the cold weather of Indiana.

My roommate already knew what she was going to consume at the park – Lamb Schwarma Platter ($12.99) from Tangierine Cafe in Morocco.  That plate of food came complete with her protein of choice (lamb) as well as a side of hummus, tabouleh and a Tangierine couscous salad with fresh Moroccan bread.  We had met up with our friend Indy, who was also running in the race, and she ventured over to Japan for some sushi.  This only left me to find food.  And while I hoped for some gluten-free vegetarian sushi, I was informed that only the Tariyaki Salmon was gluten-free in Japan.  No good.  I left feeling down.  Looked like it was back to the original plan for me that day…grabbing something at Sunshine Seasons in the food court at Epcot.

I was told they were famous for their soups…but it was hot outside and I wasn’t feeling soup.  I checked out some of the grab-and-go options…including the sushi…but not gluten-free.  Of course.  *sigh*  With no other options, it looked like I was having yet another salad.  We spoke to the person at the salad bar to find out if the Roasted Beets and Goat Cheese Salad ($7.89) was gluten-free.  She wasn’t certain, so she went to check with the chef.  He said that as long as there was no cracker served with it…it would be okay for me.

I wasn’t feeling it…but I was hungry.  So…that’s what I ordered.

The salad was rather small, comparatively speaking.  It was basically roasted red and yellow beets, served over lightly dressed spring greens.  Generous heaps of goat cheese were served with it.  And, on top, cinnamon-roasted pecans to add a bit of texture and flavor.  The entire salad was dressed with a mild honey-sherry dressing.

It was…okay.  I liked the nuts and goat cheese the best.  The beets were, actually, a good choice for the day before the race.  But there was nothing really great about this meal.  Grab-and-go is not my favorite thing as it is…and food courts are…not always the best option as a go-to for me.  But…I had to eat.  While all the flavors worked together…this just wasn’t what I really wanted that day, so it paled in comparison to anything else I could have sought out.  The problem was…this was all there was.  So, while the salad was good…it wasn’t amazing.  And I probably wouldn’t order it again even if it were the only option once again.

Meh.

Damn you Epcot and your lack of gluten-free, vegetarian ethnic food throughout your showcases.

This…was not a planned food stop on this trip.  Not at all.  But…here’s the thing.  I am an athlete through and through and I have my traditions and my superstitious.  And here is the thing…before every big or long race I run…I love to have gluten-free pizza.  And if pizza is not available, gluten-free pasta will do in a pinch.  But it’s that gluten-free pizza that seems to power me through the following morning.  And after spending the day at Epcot and only consuming a small salad…I needed something that would give me some energy for the early morning race (the race kicks off at 5:30 a.m.).

Panic mode.  None of the restaurants that have gluten-free pizza were in range of the resort.  My roomie and I were staying at Port Orleans Riverside.  And we had made it back over that way when I said I needed to have my gluten-free pizza/pasta tradition.  Honestly…this isn’t something I take lightly.  But with nothing close…I wasn’t sure how to accomplish this.

My roommate went to speak to the concierge on duty.  His name was Will and he was fantastic.  He said he knew how difficult it was to be a Celiac and said he would see what he could do to help.  He picked up the phone and called down to the food court in the resort to see if there was something they could help me with.  He was told to send us down and have us ask to see as chef.  We thanked him for his help and meandered that way.

Chef Will (from Columbus, Ohio) came out to see us and we explained that I was running in the half marathon the next morning and have a tradition of either gluten-free pizza or pasta prior to the race.  He said he could prepare either one of them for me.  So, my roommate and I each decided to get one of the gluten-free pizzas.  She could have actually gotten anything from the food court, but I think she was just trying to keep it simple.  Chef Will went to go prepare two gluten-free cheese pizzas for us (individual size) and I was forever grateful and already feeling better about the run in the morning.  He went over to the kitchen at Boatwright’s Dining Hall to actually cook the pizzas.  Then, after they were ready, he walked them out himself.

Pre-race, individual size, gluten-free cheese pizza ($8.99) made specifically because I had a dietary need…from the Riverside Mill Food Court.  I was impressed.

The pizza was…not one of the better ones I’ve had.  The usual rice cracker crust with pasta sauce and some cheese…warmed through and put onto plates.  Nothing special.  Nothing fantastic.  Nothing that made it stand out from some of the other places I have dined on gluten-free pizza.  But at the moment…nothing could have tasted better.  I appreciate the effort that Port Orleans Riverside put forth for me, specifically the help that both Will and Chef Wes gave to me to help me get the food I needed the night before my reason for being in town.

Huge sigh of relief.  Mediocre pizza…but man…that night…it tasted oh, so good!

Of all the places I ate at Disney World…this one, ironically, was my favorite.  Really.  I say ironically because it is, after all, an Italian restaurant and for the most part…Italian food is a no-go for the gluten-free diet.

Unless places can accommodate patrons.

And this place was rated high on how they can deal with food allergies…specifically gluten-free dining.

We arrived a little early for our reservation, but they didn’t mind.  A short wait and we were still seated ahead of our reservation time.  Loved that.  Our server, Elizabeth S., came to the table and noted the tag marked “ALLERGY.”  She inquired as to what the allergy was and I told her gluten.  She said the chef would be out to speak to me about my options.

A few moments later, Chef Michael was coming to the table to talk about the menu.  He said that the pastas could be made gluten-free…and he

also had gluten-free flatbreads and dinner rolls.  And, should there be room for dessert…a gluten-free flourless cake.  He asked if I knew what I wanted and I explained that since I was a vegetarian as well, I was really looking at the Spaghetti Marinara ($14.99).  He said that he could even throw in some vegetables for me if I would like.  I’ve never met a vegetable I didn’t like…so I told him I was totally game for that and he could have some fun with it.  He asked if I was interested in the gluten-free dinner rolls, and I had run 13.1 miles that day…so of course I was.

That being decided he returned to the kitchen and Elizabeth returned to the table.  Cathy opted for the Spaghetti with Meatballs and a Four Cheese Sauce ($18.99), which came with complimentary bread.

This would also be a great time to mention that my gluten-free dinner rolls…were also complimentary.  No charge.  Not at all.  And I was given 3 in my basket when they came out to the table…warm and ready to eat.  I broke one open and took a bite.  Delicious.  It tasted like what I remember a honey wheat bread to taste like.  But…it was completely gluten-free…warm…amazing…soft…and just plain YUMMY!

Entrees arrived at the table and I was taken aback by just how much food was in that bowl.  Lots of pasta.  Lots and lots of pasta.  And my favorite part was the plethora of vegetables that Chef Michael added to my dish.  I found carrots, broccoli, peppers, spinach, and mushrooms.  It was so much fun seeking out those little morsels and mixing them with the rice noodles and the delicious marinara.  I fell in love with this meal.  So much.  And, sadly, there was a lot of it.  I couldn’t finish it.  But I at least did the chef justice by eating every last vegetable I could find in that bowl.  It was a treasure hunt and I enjoyed every single bite of it.

As I had two dinner rolls remaining, I chose to take those with me to have as lunch while out and about in the parks the following day.  We were heading back to Epcot and I knew there was little for me to eat there…so now I had something that could quell any hunger pains before dinner that night.

Now…if you will recall…I mentioned that this was my favorite place I dined while in Disney World.  And, for me, that meant…I wanted more.  I was so intrigued by this gluten-free flatbread that I asked if, perhaps, on our last day there…if we could go back for dinner.  We had a big breakfast planned that morning but nothing else, and I figured we’d want something to eat before heading back to the resort to finish packing and turn in for the night.

The problem was…there was no reservations available for us.  We checked with the concierge at Port Orleans Riverside the night before…but nothing.  We checked again the following morning…still nothing.  So, it seemed we were out of luck.  On a whim, however, we decided to at least hop down to Hollywood Studios that evening to see if they might be taking walk ins.  That…was a negative.  However, the hostess did tell us to check back around 6:30 p.m. if we wanted to wait that long (it was just over an hour wait), because some people never turn up for their reservation, opting to go to the Fantasmic! show instead.

I was starving by this point, mind you, and the thought of waiting that long was daunting.  However, hopping the bus back to Port Orleans Riverside to dine on Go Picnic meals on our last night in Disney World was less than exciting.  Our other option was Sanaa, but online reservations would have us at 6:50.  Might as well wait until 6:30 here at Mama Melrose’s and see if something opened up.  If not…we’d figure something out…

Luck was with us that night.  We turned back up at 6:30 p.m. as instructed.  The hostess radioed back to see if they could take a party of two…and they could.  It meant a 20 minute wait, but I had already come this far to eat here again, I wasn’t going to stop now.  I think our wait was actually less than 20 minutes…but well worth it.  We were seated, and the allergy tag was stuck on the table once again.  Our waitress tonight was Rose.  She said that we might have to wait a little on the chef tonight, as a party of 14 was seated near us and they had kids with multiple food allergies.

The wait was well worth it.  Chef Michael came to our table and welcomed us back, already setting a basket of gluten-free dinner rolls down.  He remembered us!!  Two nights ago he made me a fantastic Spaghetti Marinara.  And we told him that we had returned tonight, since he intrigued us by gluten-free flatbread and flourless chocolate cake.

Cathy and I chose to split the Wild Mushroom Flatbread ($12.99).  He said he would get right to work on that and would keep in mind the

flourless chocolate cake.  YAY!  Rose came over to record the order to put it into the system and let us sit and enjoy our hot dinner rolls.  Chef Michael returned with some olive oil and spices to dip our rolls in, as well as some fresh butter to spread over it should we choose.  We did both.  And both were delicious choices.  We actually devoured all of the rolls before the flatbread came to the table.

The Wild Mushroom Flatbread is sort of like a pizza.  This one is a gluten-free flatbread crust that is topped with roasted cremini and button mushrooms, a garlic-shallot spread, and then finished off with the most amazing balsamic reduction.  This was complete love at first bite.  The balsamic reduction was the best touch for this, but all of the components worked together.  And the gluten-free flatbread was beyond fantastic.  Finally…a “pizza” I could really enjoy on this trip.  Amazing.  We had no trouble splitting this and polishing it off.

As for that flourless chocolate cake though…the chef searched high and low…and couldn’t find one.  But here is where the magic of Disney happens.  Because he had promised it…he instead sent out a gluten-free brownie topped with ice cream and chocolate sauce…free of charge.  The brownie was crisp on the outside, soft and warm on the inside.  And the cold ice cream sitting on top of it only enhanced the already amazing chocolate flavor of the brownie.  Right here is proof enough that gluten-free doesn’t mean tasteless or hard or dense.  This brownie was hot, rich, and packed with fudgy chocolate flavor.  It was a truly decadent and sinful treat.  But it was our last night there…and I was ready to indulge.

A very nice tip was left for our waitress and lots of praise and thanks were shared with the hostess to pass on to Chef Michael.

And I would dine here over and over again…and next time I’m at Disney…I will do just that.

Epcot…oh, Epcot.  Returning to the land of very little food for me.  But this was different.  This was dinner.  And the one place that my roomie researched when it came to gluten-free options was this beautiful Mexican restaurant in the World Showcase of Epcot.  The restaurant – La Hacienda de San Angel.

Now…I love authentic Mexican food.  I don’t eat much of it anymore because there are just too many factors that go into the food that could lead to cross contamination.  But the reviews about this place were a huge help and brought a sense of comfort with the service and the food that would be served.

In fact, it was stated online that La Hacienda de San Angel makes their own gluten-free corn tortillas in house!  This was exciting news.  My roommate took the time to print off the vegetarian menu from the Internet prior to leaving, so I had an idea of what I was going to get from that.  The Enchaladas de Vegetales actually sounded very appetizing to me as that day I was suffering a little from the banana split I had for dessert the night before (too much dairy!).  So, with an off stomach…Mexican food was sounding very daunting…but I wanted to give this a go.

We showed up early to the restaurant.  Actually, we thought we were right on time, given that there was a huge line that we went to stand in just to reach the hostess outside of the restaurant.  But, after a few minutes of standing there, the entire line cleared up.  So we were now a good 40 minutes early for our reservation.  The hostess looked up our reservation and sent us through the doors to the restaurant to have a seat and wait.  I actually anticipated waiting the entire time, but we were actually shown to our seats soon after that.

Our waiter let us slide into our booth and then he settled a napkin on each of our laps.  Ooooh….fancy.  I suddenly felt under-dressed now.  This happens every time I get a napkin placed on my lap.  But, you know…they didn’t seem to care about my jeans and t-shirt at all.  So, that fleeting moment of fashionista critic passed in a blink.  We were handed menus and asked what we would like to drink.  I once again stuck to water.

And here…was where a wave of panic settled in.  I started to peruse the menu…and save for the Ensalada de la Hacienda…there wasn’t much for me to eat.  Upon the return of our server, we were asked if we knew what we wanted to eat.  I explained that I was a gluten-free vegetarian and he said that they could easily whip up their Tacos de Vegetales (Vegetable Tacos) for me on corn tortillas.  I decided that would be much preferable to yet another salad and gave a nod of approval and said that sounded fantastic.

While we waited on our food, our server brought out the house made (and gluten-free) corn tortilla chips with two different types of salsa.  One red.  One green.  The red one was robust in tomato flavor and had a nice kick to it.  But, surprisingly, it was the salsa verde that I fell in love with.  I normally go for that heat kick, but the sweet salsa verde blended so well with the corn tortilla chips.  I couldn’t stop dipping into it.  But I knew I had tacos on the way, so I kept my pre-meal chip snack to a bare minimum.

Cathy ordered the Tacos de Camarones ($23.95).  These were basically flour tortilla tacos that were filled with fried shrimp, cabbage, lime, salsa verde, and a chipotle-lime aioli.  It was the chipotle-lime aioli that caught her eye.  In fact…she said that the description reminded her a lot of the shrimp tempura tacos that she gets at our local eatery, Dragon King’s Daughter (locations in New Albany, Indiana and Louisville, Kentucky).  And when they arrived, they actually sort of resembled that too, save for the addition of the cabbage.

My Tacos de Vegetales ($19.95) were a similar story.  I was so impressed with these…and that was at first glance when they set them down in

front of me.  These corn tortillas were stuffed full of grilled vegetables, cabbage, roasted corn, black beans, and topped with a little queso fresco.  My tacos were also topped off with a bit of the chipotle-lime aioli as well and…yeah…it was magic.  A Mexican fiesta in my mouth for sure.  The depth of flavor in these simple tacos was astounding.  The black beans were awesome and added a nice protein aspect as well as a richness that the tacos really needed.  The cabbage gave it some crunch.  And the roasted corn and grilled veggies were delicious.  The corn was the star of the tacos though.  Roasted to perfection and full of flavor.  I devoured all three of the tacos on my plate.

Our meals were served with sides of refried black beans and Mexican rice.  The rice was fantastically seasoned and spiced.  It had a bit of a kick to it, which I enjoyed and appreciated.  But the star of the sides that came with our food was definitely the refried black beans.  They were rich and full of this depth of flavor that was astounding.  I wanted to eat the entire bowl, but the tacos were very filling, so I had a couple of spoonfuls of both the rice and beans and left it at that.

Dessert was offered, but we chose not to indulge tonight as our meal was quite filling on its own.  We left completely full and quite happy with the value of the meal and the quality of the food we experienced.  I loved how the staff didn’t even bat an eyelash when I said I was a gluten-free vegetarian, immediately having a dish that they could offer me.  I enjoyed how they assured me everything was gluten-free and safe for me to eat.  And I enjoyed every…filling…bite.

I would have gone back to this restaurant in a heartbeat as well…but they were booked solid the night we were there and not accepting walk-ins at all…so I bid it adios and was thankful for the dining experience.

Let it be said that you should never travel to Disney World and not attend one of the character breakfasts.  For real.  My roommate did all the planning on this one, deciding on a breakfast at 1900 Park Fare, located inside the Grand Floridian Resort.  Now, this resort is rather grand on its own…outside and inside.

But the Supercalifragilistic Breakfast was our character breakfast of choice.  This is basically a festive, all-you-care-to-eat breakfast buffet, with Disney character guests that make appearances while you eat.  We actually arrived earlier than anticipated because our Disney bus driver dropped us off at the resort instead of having us get off at one of the parks to catch a bus to the resort.  Awesome.  We appreciated that, but it left us with a bunch of extra time.

So, after wandering around the lobby we noticed a line forming at 1900 Park Fare and decided that we could at least check in with the hostess and maybe get seated earlier instead of with the 8:30 a.m. wave.  They were happy to accommodate and noticed that there was a food allergy listed on the reservation.  They handed me two tickets for the breakfast, both marked “ALLERGY.”  When they opened the doors to seat us, we handed over these tickets and were shown to our table.  I was informed by the woman who seated us that a chef would come over to talk to me.  While Cathy could have gone and loaded up her plate with breakfast goodies, she opted to wait for me to see the chef.

The chef did arrive a little bit later and asked me to walk with him.  What he did was take me through the buffet line, pointing out what foods I could safely eat.  They were good about keeping things were there would be no cross-contamination.  The fruit was okay, the scrambled eggs were safe, the potatoes were safe…etc.  And then he said the words that made me the happiest gluten-free girl in Disney that morning.  That he could make me gluten-free waffles.  Gluten-free Mickey Mouse waffles.  Just.  For.  Me.

THRILLED!  I said that waffles sounded amazing and he said he would get to work on them and bring them to my table…but to go ahead and get anything else from the buffet that he pointed out to me.  So, with that said, I joined Cathy at the table and said he was making me some waffles, but we could hit up the buffet now.

In the line of the buffet, I went ahead and got a bunch of different fruits…honeydew melon, cantaloupe, watermelon, strawberries, grapes…yummy.  In addition, I ladled a little of the strawberry soup into a bowl to try.  I decided to give the hash brown potatoes and some of the scrambled eggs a try as they were deemed safe for my consumption.  And I was hungry.

As I settled back into my seat and started eating some of the sweet fruit, the chef appeared at my side with a plate of four gluten-free Mickey Mouse waffles.  I thanked him and couldn’t wipe the smile off my face as I moved one over to my plate, sliced off an ear, and gave it a dip in the real maple syrup he brought out with it.

Waffles never tasted so good.  They were sweet and light and fluffy and SHAPED LIKE MICKEY MOUSE!  I mean…come on!!  It doesn’t get much better than that.  And honestly, I’ve eaten quite a few gluten-free waffles at places, as well as made my own, and had the frozen kinds…and none come close to equaling these.  Perfection.  The fact that they weren’t heavy made it a synch to eat all four of them.  And I still went back for more fruit, more eggs, and a few more hash browns.  WORTH IT.

And, to top it off…our Disney character guests arrived and made their way around the dining room to greet the guests.  At the Supercalifragilistic Breakfast, we had the honor of meeting Winnie the Pooh, Tigger, Mary Poppins, Alice in Wonderland, and The Mad Hatter.  And all of them were so much fun to talk to, get pictures with, and interact with.  I don’t care if I’m in my thirties…I loved every moment of this breakfast and meeting the characters.  You’re never too old for Disney characters.  Mary Poppins sure was charming and I had been wanting to meet her all weekend.  So this was AWESOME!

The Supercalifragilistic Breakfast is $21.95 per person and includes the buffet and a non-alcoholic beverage.  The food was really delicious.  The company was awesome.  And the care was above and beyond expectations.  I am already wanting to go back and do another character breakfast!

The one place that I was anticipating indulging in as often as possible was Babycakes NYC in Downtown Disney.  The most difficult part, at least the first night we were there seeking it out…was locating the place.  For the record, it is located in the same building as Pollo Campero and Bodie’s…right next to LEGO Land.  So…now you won’t have to log onto the Web site and look it up.  You’re welcome.

Cathy and I were seeking this out at night to have breakfast ready in the room, that way we could get an early start and not have to wait for 9 a.m. to roll around to get breakfast…and then eat…and then head out for the day.  This way…we were set and could head out after a quick bite in our room.  This was a fantastic arrangement, by the way.  And the baked goods were just as good the following morning.

I own a Babycakes NYC cookbook and the vegan & gluten-free foods sounded fantastic.  I haven’t made it up to New York City yet…but the fact that they have a branch at Disney World was enough for me to tell Cathy that we were eating there every single morning that it was feasible.  And, with the exception of two days…we did exactly that.

Being that we were seeking out breakfast…we stuck to the case with the doughnuts and loaves.  We each would pick a doughnut and a loaf to enjoy the following morning.  And there was quite a selection to choose from too.  All of these were both vegan and gluten-free…meaning I had nothing to worry about when it came to my breakfasts.  The most difficult part was choosing what I wanted to eat.

So…it went like this:

Trip #1: Cinnamon Sugar Doughnut ($3.49) and a Blueberry Toastie (Loaf) ($3.49)

And that was just breakfast.  In addition…Cathy had a few other options as well that I didn’t get for me, but we sampled each other’s choices.  Cathy fell in love with the Lemon Poppyseed Loaf ($3.49), the Chocolate Cookie Crunch Doughnut ($3.49), and her favorite…the Cornbread Loaf ($3.49).

Okay…my most favorite of the doughnuts was the Cinnamon Sugar Doughnut…but cinnamon sugar has always been one of my favorite doughnuts to eat (blueberry being my favorite!).  But here was the thing…they were so moist, so light and so very delicious.  No one would be able to tell that these were vegan and gluten-free just by eating them.  I was in sugar-rush heaven.  I’m not big on glazed or dipped doughnuts, but these weren’t too bad.  I find glazes and dips to be heavy…and these were…but the doughnuts were light and fluffy and flavorful…and when all is said and done…they worked well together.  Everything just worked.

And the loafs…OH. MY. GOD.  My favorite had to be the Pumpkin Chip Loaf…but they were all very good.  They were sweet enough to satisfy that food craving and filling without being too much…even with the doughnuts.  I found each one full of flavor.  And my roommate will forever rave about that corn bread loaf.  It was her favorite thing…and she only was able to get it one night…so thankfully she took a chance on that when she did.  I also really liked the Blueberry Toastie…which had tons of fruity flavor and sweetness with the glaze and all.  And of course, pumpkin and banana bread…you can’t go wrong with either of them.  So moist.  Bite-for-bite…even after sitting overnight in a box on the table in the hotel room…these were still moist and tasted like they were fresh from the bakery.  Yeah…beyond impressed.

But we also sampled some other choices from Babycakes NYC as well.  For dessert one night, we split one of their Chocolate Chip Cookie Sandwiches ($3.49), which was fantastic.  The chocolate chip cookies are thin, and crunchy, and sweet.  Honestly…gluten-free cookie perfection.  Normally I’m a chewy cookie kind of girl…but these were wafer-thin and had that perfect crumbly, sweet texture that works with chocolate chip cookies.  And the frosting was vegan and made with cane sugar.  It was moist and very sweet…so I was glad Cathy and I were splitting the cookie sandwich.  I actually forgot to take a picture of that…but it was delicious.

So, on our last night there…we picked up our breakfast doughnuts and loaves…and they had a special on their gluten-free chocolate chip cookies ($1.00).  So, we got two of them…one for each of us…because they were each discounted by $0.50…and when you’re on vacation and stocking up on sweets…that’s a good deal.  We saved these for our last walk around our resort, and happily chewed away at the crunchy, buttery-flavored, amazing cookies.  Yeah…heaven in cookie form.  It was the right amount of sweetness and really hit the spot.  It was the best way to wrap up our stay at Disney World…enjoying a vegan and gluten-free treat from the place we visited the most – Babycakes NYC.

And there it is…my dining experiences at Disney World.  Nothing catastrophic happened.  I had my favorite food moments and my favorite food places…and I had meals that amazed me…meals that made me want to go back…meals that made me happy…and only a couple of disappointments.  Not bad for this gluten-free vegetarian traveler.  I am so thankful that Disney World is trained, prepared, and helpful to people with dietary restrictions.  It took a load off my mind…and helped me focus on enjoying myself…and of course…preparing for the half marathon I was there to run.

Which…went so well, despite being high humidity (yes…at 5:30 a.m.)…leading to me shaving 2 minutes off my personal record and setting a new record for myself.  I enjoyed the race…I enjoyed Disney World…and I enjoyed eating there and feeling confident in the fact that they truly were looking out for me in those kitchens.

Talk about taking a load off.

Mmmmm…

The words gluten-free and ice cream sandwich are normally not found hand-in-hand.  But thanks to the teaming up of Glutenfreeda (who provides the cookie portion of the ice cream sandwich) with Julie’s Organic Ice Cream…even the gluten-free can have a sweet taste of an ice cream sandwich.  Even better…not being limited to just the chocolate cookies with the vanilla ice cream.  While it is traditional and the most common, even in the ice cream sandwiches that are not gluten-free, Julie’s Organic Ice Cream offers up four different varieties of gluten-free ice cream sandwich cookies.

And I have now had them all…with my final taste going to the Carrot Cake Ginger Ice Cream Sandwich Cookie.

This one actually was the one that my roommate dreaded.  She isn’t the biggest fan of carrot cake (unless I make it, she says) nor ginger…so she sort of put off eating this one until I just marched over to the freezer the other day when it was time for dessert and pulled these out.  Her reaction, “Oh…we’re having those?”  And picture this being said in the most unenthusiastic tone of voice one can conjure.  She was really, really, really not happy that I made that decision.

However…her tune soon changed…

The Carrot Cake Ginger Ice Cream Sandwich Cookies are composed of ginger cookies made by Glutenfreeda that are soft and crumbly…like a pie crust.  And the carrot cake ice cream is what fills these up and gives them their amazing combined flavor.  I’ve never had carrot cake ice cream before, but if it always tastes like this…I want more of it in my life!!

These ice cream sandwiches were SO delicious.  My roommate took the first taste while I was snapping pictures for the blog (as I tend to do).  And she says, “Oh…it tastes like a frozen pumpkin pie!”  I finished taking pictures as she went to sit down and nosh on hers a bit more and took my first taste.  She was absolutely correct.  Forget carrot cake flavor, these really did taste like a frozen pumpkin pie.  The ginger cookie gave the illusion of a crust and the ice cream was just super good.  I loved the combination of flavors and how they would melt together on my tongue.  The cookies are super soft, so that adds a crumbly consistency to them which sort of makes these more pie-like in the end.

SO YUMMY!!

I found myself looking forward to dessert the next day…but dinner was taking forever to cook (naturally).  But, anticipation is part of the fun, yes?  And when we settled in to devour the final two in the package, we sadly big adieu to these ice cream sandwiches.  Phenomenal flavor.  I would totally buy these again in a heartbeat.  Absolutely loved them.

So, if you happen to be out at the store and looking for something different to try…whether you need to eat gluten-free or not…I highly recommend trying Julie’s Organic Carrot Cake Ginger Ice Cream Sandwich Cookies.  It’s a slice of heavenly pie in ice cream form…and boy…is it ever delicious!

Safety for allergen-sensitive customers a priority at Harry & Izzy’s in downtown Indianapolis, Indiana

Twas the night before the Santa Hustle Half Marathon and all through the city, this runner’s stomach was rumbling…and that meant one thing…gluten-free pizza.

It’s a race tradition for me these days. I tend to run better in races the day after I eat a gluten-free pizza dinner. Hey…I’m an athlete with superstitions now. And for me…the night before races means I have to eat gluten-free pizza (or gluten-free pizza related). The one time I didn’t eat something pizza related, I felt like death at the end of the race (granted, that might have been the 90% humidity that I ran in, but still…)

So, with that in mind, my roommate went on the hunt for places in downtown Indianapolis that offered gluten-free pizza that wouldn’t be too difficult to get to from our hotel. Just up the way was Harry & Izzy’s, who actually have a gluten-free menu…with, yes, gluten-free pizza on the menu.

Harry & Izzy’s is an independent, upscale American Grill with two locations: downtown and at the Indianapolis International Airport. It is actually the sister restaurant to the famous St. Elmo Steak House, which means they share a few classic dishes. Some of which are even on the gluten-free menu.

However…the added difficulty with me is that I’m also a vegetarian. So, with the exception of one of the salads, I was pretty much limited to the pizza anyway. But…I’m okay with that. The pizza was the entire reason I was there to begin with.

Dinner tonight was being shared with Cathy (the roomie) and our friend Greg. Once we were finally seated (they were changing over the tables from lunch to dinner, so it took our hostess three tries to get us to a table that was ready for us), we were handed menus and asked if we were going to want something other than ice water to drink. As I am running tomorrow, I stayed with the water. So did Cathy. We also went ahead and gave our waitress the heads up that I am medically gluten-free. She said she would go grab a gluten-free menu for me and that when she takes my order, the manager would come up and talk to me and ask if I had any questions with the menu. I actually loved that.

Greg arrived soon after and we settled into conversation as we had much to catch up on. Our waitress returned with the manager, Amy, who directed her focus right on me to talk to me about their gluten-free options. She asked if I had any specific questions regarding the menu. At that point, I didn’t. So she said our waitress would now take our order and if I had any concerns, to just ask for her. What a great perk. It really put my mind to ease about how the food was prepared on the gluten-free menu when the manager makes a point to come out and talk to me about it. Yeah, I felt confident. I was ready for some pizza.

So…we placed our orders. Greg went with the Steakburger, a burger served with cheese (he had them leave that off), lettuce, tomato, onion, and a spicy mayo ($12.00). He chose the coleslaw as his side item.

Cathy and I decided that we would split the 10-inch gluten-free thin crust pizza on the menu. For our toppings, we chose cheese, mushrooms, and caramelized onions ($12.00). The plain cheese pizza normally runs $10, but each additional topping is $1 each. That is an awesome price for a gluten-free pizza, let me tell you!

Our waitress went to go put in order and for the time being, we got caught up on eveything that has been keeping our lives so busy as of late. It had been awhile since we last got together with Greg and we had much to talk about. As our food was nearing time to come out, I noticed our waitress grab a couple of plates for my roommate and I. She specifically wiped them off and placed them in front of us. I appreciated that too, as it means they are very aware of the dangers of cross-contamination and were taking no chances.

A few minutes later, our waitress was climbing the stairs with a tray laden with our food. The burger was set down in front of Greg and Cathy and I were given the pizza. Our waitress aid that the Parmesan cheese might have something in it to keep it fresher longer that might be gluten-free, but I prefer red pepper flakes on my pizza anyway…so my roommate got the fresh Parmesan and I took the red pepper flakes. I appreciated my waitress mentioning the possibility that the cheese wasn’t safe. That is often the case when it comes to Parmesan at restaurants anyway…so I normally just skip it regardless. I prefer a little added spice to my pizza regardless and always opt for the red pepper in the end.

The pizza was sliced so that Cathy and I would each get three slices. And let me tell you…this pizza was really delicious. It is brick oven baked, and that is evident from the crispness of the outer crust of the pizza. I did find the inner crust to be softer than I would normally like…but when you can’t bake a pizza on a pizza stone, that crispiness is sometimes very hard to achieve. That being said…I was impressed. With the first bite, the complete flavors of the sauce, the cheese, the mushrooms, and the perfectly caramelized onions all came together on my palate and it was just…yummy. Super, duper, delicious yummy! I don’t think the crust is actually made by Harry & Izzy’s…but the fact is they cook it up fantastically. And my roommate and I devoured each bite. Each slice was completely downed and enjoyed thoroughly.

And, yes, even after that…we left a little room for dessert. The waitress asked if I was feeling the Créme Brûlée…but it was the Sorbet that caught my attention. I love ice cream and frozen goodies…so the sorbet sounded like the perfect palate cleanser and way to end the meal. I was given a choice: lemon or raspberry. I decided on the Lemon Sorbet ($3.50). Cathy and Greg decided they would split the Signature Brownie ($8.00) from the homemade dessert menu. I couldn’t enjoy that chocolate goodness due to the brownie, but the dessert consisted of a homemade brownie topped with vanilla ice cream, hot fudge, caramel sauce and candied pecans.

Our desserts arrived. I had two amazing scoops of delightful, light, pleasing lemon sorbet. I loved how it wasn’t too sweet or sour. It was the perfect level of each for lemon sorbet. My problem with sorbets normally is that they can be too sweet. So after a few bites, I’m done and craving something to counterbalance the sweetness. This wasn’t the case with this sorbet. It was balanced and refreshing. And it was just what I needed at the end of my meal.

The Signature Brownie was this tower of dessert awesomeness. It was definitely meant to split. Cathy and Greg managed, between them, to devour it completely. But it was a near thing. Cathy raved about the brownie base, saying that you could tell that it was freshly made. It died a very messy death between the two of them. And it looked so good. Now there is something I totally miss since going gluten-free…the amazing dessert sundaes I used to be able to help eat.

To say that I was impressed with the service and the food at Harry & Izzy’s is an understatement. I felt confident that the food I was receiving was safe to eat. They took very, very good care of me and were very careful with the food that I ordered. I have already said that whenever we are in Indianapolis, this had to be our go-to spot for food. There was plenty on the menu that caught Cathy’s eye…so she seems more than happy to go along with that.

Being a Celiac means that the food has to be safely prepared and served. Not every restaurant knows how to do that properly. But with Harry & Izzy’s…I had no concerns about the food I was served and appreciated all the attention given to me and others who have food allergies. I appreciated that the manager personally came out to talk to me and answer any questions I might have about food preparation and the menu in general.

When I feel that safe at a restaurant, of course I’ll want to go back. I’m looking forward to my return sometime in the near future.

Thank you, Harry & Izzy’s for the delicious, safe meal. I can’t rave about you enough. The precautions you take set my mind at ease and made me feel content in my decision to eat there. It means so much to me that you take that sort of care and consideration for those with food allergies.

I didn’t know they existed until I was wandering down the frozen food aisle of my local Earth Fare grocery store.  I was just glancing in and out of the freezers, looking for something…anything…that might catch my eye.  Something that might be gluten-free.  Maybe.  If I prayed really hard and closed my eyes…maybe it would be so.

Or something to that affect…just less dramatic.

The fact of the matter was, I was at the grocery store and as I was searching the aisles, I stumbled across two new flavors of gluten-free ice cream sandwiches from Julie’s.  Thrilled?  Yes.  Ecstatic?  Very much.  Did I buy them?  OF COURSE!

And then…the reality of my overflowing gluten-free pantry hit…and I didn’t get to eat them.  Not right away.  Not until two nights ago, in fact.  Thank goodness there was no freezer burn on them.  I would have cried had it been so.

The Cherry Cheesecake Sandwich Cookies are amazing.  No…they really are.  Picture with me, if you will…two chocolate sandwich cookies (manufactured by Glutenfreeda…so they are gluten-free) that are packed…literally packed full of cherry cheesecake ice cream.  If that sounds amazing to you, then let me tell you…this is not a figment of my overactive foodie imagination.  No, my friends.  This reality was brought to life by Julie’s Organic Ice Cream.

Cherry and chocolate is a fantastic combination as it is, but this ice cream sandwich brings out the best of everything sweet that I love.  Cherries…check.  Cheesecake…check.  Chocolate…check.  Ice cream…check.  Totally gluten-free too.  Which means…I get ice cream sandwiches!!

I had been previously blown away by the taste, texture, and awesomeness of the original (chocolate gluten-free cookies with vanilla ice cream) ice cream sandwiches and the Lemon Yogurt Ice Cream Sandwiches (lemon yogurt between vanilla gluten-free cookies).  So, I figured this one had a lot to live up to.  But…I have a lot of faith in these products as they have not only impressed me, but impressed my friends who can eat regular ice cream sandwiches.  So much that they prefer these instead!

The Cherry Cheesecake Ice Cream Sandwich Cookie is a mouthful to say…but it’s a delight to eat.  Honestly.  I love the way the soft chocolate cookie melts away with the delicious and smooth cherry cheesecake ice cream.  Totally wowed by this flavor.  The lemon is still my favorite thus far…but this one is a very close second.  It was like biting into a cheesecake with a chocolate crust.  It brought back so many delicious and amazing memories.  I can’t wait to devour the other one waiting for me in the freezer.

As far as sweet, ice-creamy snacks go, the nutrition information on this one isn’t too bad.  One ice cream sandwich will set you back 200 calories and 9 grams of fat.  That’s not bad for an ice cream sandwich.  And, let me tell you, it is worth every creamy, dreamy calorie.  For real.

Search high and low for these at your local grocery store…and if you don’t see them, see if the store can order them in.  Trust me…you’ll want to take a bite out of these…and then polish it off.  It’s hard to eat just one.

A vegan Creamy Vanilla ice cream that is So Delicious

When you name your company So Delicious, you are definitely setting a high standard for not only your branding, but also the products that you put out.  So far, I have yet to have a flop with the So Delicious items that I have tried.  I know…most of said products have been in a non-dairy ice cream form.

That trend continues here…

My local grocery store had a great sale going on for the So Delicious quarts of ice cream awhile back.  After sending my roommate out for an item I needed for something I was cooking, she returned with a huge surprise for me.  Three quarts of So Delicious non-dairy ice creams to try.  And since then, I have dug into the Chocolate Velvet and the Neapolitan flavors and fallen in love with each of them.

All that remained in my freezer was the Creamy Vanilla one.  I really wanted to dress this ice cream up.  I mean, we all love vanilla ice cream…but it is so versatile.  I was thinking of melting chocolate over it…or getting some chocolate syrup from the store…or topping it with fruit and nuts…or sandwiching it between two gluten-free cookies.  The possibilities were endless.  I mean, vanilla ice cream is like being handed a blank piece of paper and a pencil.  You can get as creative with it as you want.

Little did I know that in the end…I’d basically be enjoying it as it was made.  Undressed.  But…perfectly matched.

So Delicious Creamy Vanilla is a soy milk based ice cream that is vegan, kosher, and gluten-free.  It is also non-GMO certified.  YAY!  That being said, this ice cream had been hanging in my freezer since the summer…so there was no way of telling what state I might find it in when I cracked it open last night.  I almost expected freezer burn and ice crystals.

But…I was wrong.  When I pulled the lid off the quart, a beautiful white surface looked back at me.  Perfect vanilla.  And it smelled of vanilla too.  So amazing.

When I said perfectly paired just above I wasn’t kidding.  You see, I have been watching Hotel Hell (Gordon Ramsay’s new show) and one of the hotels he went to help turn around was one that invented Apple Pie À La Mode.  No joke.  And I just happened to have a gluten-free apple pie in my freezer as well.  Hmmm…what to do…

So, last night after hurrying through dinner in an attempt to make it out to a concert (The Dave Matthews Band was in town) on time, my roommate and I actually allowed ourselves a moment for a palate cleansing dessert.  Never miss dessert.  It is very important.  I had thawed out the pie earlier that day so all I needed to do was toss it in the microwave (Gordon Ramsay would FLIP OUT!).  While a tiny slice of pie was heating, I opened up the So Delicious Creamy Vanilla ice cream and got out a spoon.

Apple pie à la mode is a slice of apple pie topped with vanilla ice cream.  The warm pie melts the ice cream that is layered on top and what emerges is this amazing dessert that is both hot and cold and melty and yummy and…*DROOL*.  Ahem.  Sorry.  Bit of a food nerd here.  At least I’m a foodie who loves to eat (within my dietary restrictions that is!).

So, when the microwave tolled it’s completion of the heating process, I removed the plate with the slice of pie resting on it and eased my spoon into the ice cream.

Smooth.  I expected something rock-hard, or flaky (some non-dairy ice creams can be crystallized and a bit hard to get a good, creamy scoop out of).  But So Delicious really delivered here.  The ice cream folded up in the spoon to create a perfect scoop.  I set it alongside the pie (trust me, for calorie purposes, the serving size was halved and setting any ice cream on top of this itty-bitty slice was not an option).  I repeated it with the other half of the slice and served one to my roommate and myself.

Oh. My. Foodie. God.

First of all, having a delicious gluten-free pie is one thing.  But the ice cream.  Oh, the ice cream just totally made this dessert.  I loved how it mixed perfectly with the buttery, flaky goodness of the pie crust, and the hot apples in the center just aided in creating this hot/cold, flaky/melty mess of a dessert.  And it was everything I dreamed it would be.

The So Delicious Creamy Vanilla won’t slap you in the face with its vanilla flavor.  It is very subtle.  That being said it is also very delicious.  Trust me.  I was highly impressed.  I loved how it had just the right hit of vanilla flavor so that it wasn’t underwhelming or overwhelming.  It was just perfect.  I would buy this again in a heartbeat…and eat it straight.  I might even still turn it into a sundae, or just put it in a gluten-free ice cream cone (I still have some of those in my pantry!).

Being lactose intolerant and gluten free doesn’t have to mean ice cream is off limits.  It just means you find an ice cream that suits you.  Preferably one that is So Delicious.
