This review…is long overdo.

Here is my confession –

I actually went into Cherbourg Bakery back on December 31, 2011.  I did.  Because my friend Jenn had told me about them and while we were out and about that day, we decided to swing by and get some New Years treats.  The problem was…we waited a little too long.  The bakery was pretty much sold out of everything save for the Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies, a Carrot Cake Muffin, and a Chocolate Cupcake.  We actually had our hearts set on the Double Lemon Bars…but they were long gone and the bakery was almost out of treats due to the holiday. Understandable.  So, we took one of the items that were left and headed home.

That night, we split everything three ways and had our first taste of what Cherbourg Bakery could do.  The cookie was my favorite thing, which is weird for me since I’m not a fan of oatmeal cookies.  But…yeah…these rocked.  It was delicate and caramel-y.  And the chocolate chips just made it soar.  The carrot cake muffin was…pretty good.  It was spiced just right for a carrot cake, but it didn’t compare to the cookie.  And the chocolate cupcake was…good enough.  I thought it felt heavy compared to the lightness of the previous two treats, but it was rich, chocolate goodness in one bite.  And, yes…I devoured all three.

I had thought to write up my review based on that…but then found that I just couldn’t do it.  It wasn’t fair.  I wasn’t able to really test them by ordering what I wanted.  I had to order what they still had.

But, I had another chance because I often find myself in Columbus, Ohio.  So, on the day before I ran in the Air Force Marathon 10K, I was driving past Cherbourg Bakery with my roommate on our way to get coffee at Caribou Coffee and she asked if I wanted to stop in and grab something for me to eat for breakfast, since Caribou has nothing I can really nosh on.  I thought this idea was the best idea I heard…so we turned around, parked, and went in.

This time, Cherbourg had everything I could ever dream of and more.  Giant blueberry muffins, delicate cookies, the double lemon bars!!  They had donuts and brownies and were just brimming with baked goods.  I stepped into a gluten-free heaven of baked wonders.  And so…when it was my turn to order, I ended up getting a Chocolate Donut (with chocolate icing and sprinkles…because…why not?), a Madeleine Cookie, and one of the Double Lemon Bars.  We paid for the treats and left to continue on to the coffee shop.

And I couldn’t wait.  I asked my roommate if she wanted to split the Double Lemon Bar right then.  Of course she agreed.  So, there in the car, I somehow managed to half the creamy, lemony bar in half.  I handed her a napkin and her half of the bar and before I could even pick mine up, she had taken a bite and was already in love with it.  When I took my bite of the lemon bar, I now understood why these were so popular.  The Double Lemon Bar is a refreshing treat with every bite.  It is a shortbread cookie base with a very lemony center.  Dusted with powdered sugar, you get the right balance of sweetness and tart, while the shortbread cookie lends a buttery, much-needed savoriness to temper the hit of lemon.  It was one of the best things I have ever eaten…no joke.  In fact, I loved them so much, that when I was at the hotel in Dayton the night before the race, I called the bakery and ordered three more, so Jenn, Cathy and I could each indulge in one for dessert that evening.

Upon arriving at Caribou Coffee, Cathy ordered her breakfast sandwich and got our caffeine for the morning.  We took up residence at one of the tables to enjoy the rest of our breakfast.  Once she received her breakfast sandwich, I popped open the bakery box and now had to decide if I wanted to eat the donut first or the Madeleine.

I decided to sample both…but I started with the Chocolate Donut.  I broke off a piece of the round, baked wonder and loved how light it felt.  Yes…even with the icing and sprinkles.  It wasn’t dense or too heavy, especially for a cake-like donut.  I was already impressed.  Then, I popped it into my mouth…and truly fell under the spell of Cherbourg once again.    The donut was moist and rich, the chocolate flavor the start.  The chocolate icing melted away, really adding to the stunning richness of this donut.  I had to gobble it up.  I just couldn’t stop myself.  I did pause long enough to share a piece with my roommate, who also expressed a deep love of the chocolate flavor, the light texture, and the all-around awesomeness of the bite.  Yeah…it was one perfect chocolate iced chocolatey bite.

And last, but certainly not least was the little Madeleine cookie.  Madeleines are classic French teacake cookies.  And these had the perfect shell shape to them and everything.  I was intrigued by it.  And when I broke off my first bite and tasted it…I was forever hooked on these French classics.  Cherbourg delivers a buttery, light flavor with every soft bite of these little teacakes.  I was enamored by it.  I, once again, shared a piece with my roommate and she was also blown away.  Considering she doesn’t have to eat gluten-free, hearing her praise the items that I am able to eat made me so happy.  I was in absolute love with the products I chose that morning to sample.

So, while this review might be a little late, it was definitely worth the wait.  I wanted to be fair to Cherbourg Bakery when I wrote it.  I wanted to critique it on items I truly would order, not just on what was left in stock.  I’m glad I waited because it yielded a much better review overall.  Now, every time I happen to be in Columbus (like this coming weekend…) I am going to make Cherbourg Bakery a stop.  They have muffins, bars, breads, brownies and cakes that have still yet to be sampled.  And I hear their seasonal Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Bars are one of the most exciting gluten-free goodies ever.  And the Monster Blueberry Muffins seem to be calling my name as well.

Cherbourg Bakery, I hope that you live long and prosper in Columbus, Ohio.  I know that I’ll frequent you whenever I find myself there.  Which is quite often with one of my best friends living there.  Keep on rocking those baked goods.  What you do is wonderful for the gluten-free community.  I have been singing your praises and bragging about you ever since.

I have a feeling…the best is yet to come.

A pricey but delicious brunch at Patachou On The Park in Indianapolis, Indiana

Patachou On The Park, Indianapolis, Indiana

Restaurant: Patachou On The Park, Indianapolis, Indiana

What’s my favorite meal of the day?

That’s right, friend’s.  It’s breakfast!  I love, love, love breakfast.

So, on the morning after my half marathon, I woke up in Indianapolis and was ready for a good breakfast.  Cathy had done some research on great places to grab either breakfast or brunch that would have some options for me and stumbled across Patachou On The Park via Find Me Gluten Free.  It had some really great reviews, so we decided that we would give this place a try before checking out of the hotel and making our way home.

We were there right when they opened on Sunday morning at 8 a.m.  We entered and were told to take a seat wherever we liked.  We chose a corner table with a long bench on one side that shared with other tables along that line, and a chair on the other.  We settled in with the menu and soon or waitress came over to see what we wanted to eat.  She said that they had a self-serve coffee bar if that was what we wanted, but both Cathy and I chose to get some caffeine through Diet Coke ($1.95…and served in the can) and water.

While she was there, we mentioned that I was medically gluten-free and she asked about the level of my intolerance just so she could be clear.  We went over the restrictions with her and she seemed confident that they could provide a safe meal for me.  And mentioned that they did serve Udi’s Gluten-Free Bread.  Do you know what this meant?  This meant that I didn’t have to just have an omelet.  Now, I love a good omelet, but it seems like that’s always my go-to and these brunch places, as most don’t have gluten-free bread, gluten-free pancakes, gluten-free waffles, or gluten-free anything besides eggs.  So, this was a nice change of pace.

That being the case, when it came time to order, both Cathy and I opted to go with the Broken Yolk Sandwiches, as they were items we couldn’t just get anywhere else.  Omelets we could do anywhere with the fixings that were offered…but these were different.  What is a Broken Yolk Sandwich?  It’s two fried eggs, served runny unless you request otherwise, topped with whatever option you choose from the menu on the bread of choice.  They have quite a list of them.

Cathy chose to get the Broken Yolk Sandwich with Bacon ($10.25), which consisted of two fried eggs, cheddar cheese and Indiana
bacon.  For her toast, she chose sourdough…a fantastic choice for a breakfast sandwich.

As for me, I went with the plain Broken Yolk Sandwich ($9.75), which consists of two fried eggs and cheddar cheese.  Naturally, I ordered mine on gluten-free bread (+$1.50).  It was really the only one that was vegetarian without removing ingredients from the sandwich, which could mess with the integrity of the flavor.  I was okay with this though.  It sounded delicious.

Both Cathy and I opted for the fruit bowl as our side instead of a small salad.  After all…who does salad for breakfast?

Shortly after the orders went in, our waitress was coming to the table with our plates of food.  I must admit…the plates look fantastic.  The sandwich looked amazing and filling.  And it was.

The gluten-free bread that they use at Patachou On The Park is Udi’s Gluten-Free Bread.  I hate that they charge more for gluten-free bread.  There are so many places that graciously just offer it without the up-charge, but I, as a gluten-free consumer knows that gluten-free bread costs more than regular breads so…that’s why the up-charge is often there.  It just…sucks.

Not quite sure how to eat it, I opted for the fork and knife approach.  With the runny eggs, I knew it would be messy, and this actually proved to be a good option.  Cathy was actually able to pick hers up to eat.  Sourdough is a much sturdier bread than gluten-free bread and while mine ended up soggy, hers held together really well.

So, if you eat here…I recommend fork and knife for the gluten-free Broken Yolk Sandwich option.  Trust me.  It’s the best way to eat it.  Each bite was awesome.  Egg, bread, cheese…three of my favorite things.  And not one bite lacked any of this.  I even was able to give mine a little kick with a dash of Sriracha, because I love heat with my eggs regardless of how I am eating them.  It was a really great combination.

As for the fruit bowl, there was quite the variety.  Very ripe and sweet pineapple, peeled oranges (I appreciated this as most places leave the peel on and it’s just awkward), strawberries, blueberries, grapes.  All perfectly sweet and at the right level of ripeness. I liked it.  I love it when my fruit is ripe.

Overall…the food was great…it tasted fantastic.  It was fresh, made in house with local products, and really delicious.  My one problem with Patachou on the Park was the price.  The two breakfast sandwiches and the Diet Coke cans set us back nearly $30.  For breakfast!!!  Now, I’ve spent that kind of money at breakfast/brunch places, but I typically get potatoes with my meal in addition to the fruit and the egg dish.  So, do be prepared to pay a lot for your meal here.  The food is great, so it is worth the price, but it did give me a bit of sticker shock.

It was definitely worth the visit to give the food a try, but I think next time I’ll seek out somewhere with more affordable prices and equally as good food.  They exist all over Indianapolis.  I wasn’t at all disappointed with the food…just the cost.

But…you do get what you pay for.  And I did get good food.  Bottom line…that’s the important thing.

Amazing attention to food allergies and flavor at Adobo Grill in Indianapolis, Indiana

Adobo Grill, Indianapolis, Indiana
Adobo Grill, Indianapolis, Indiana

Restaurant: Adobo Grill, Indianapolis, Indiana

I almost backed out of going to this amazing Mexican restaurant on account of not feeling well due to dehydration brought on from a red flagged half marathon that morning.  I wasn’t feeling good all day and I wasn’t sure how well my stomach would handle Mexican food being fed to it after the abuse I put it through just to get through the race.

In the end, however, I am glad I decided to go.  And for the record…I actually was hungry when I stepped into the restaurant with my roomie and actually could smell the authentic Mexican cuisine as other diners enjoyed their meals.  Yeah…Cathy made a good choice when she set up reservations for this restaurant prior to the race.

What made her choose this over say…the place up the way with gluten-free pizza?  The answer was quite simple.  Adobo Grill in Indianapolis had rave reviews on Find Me Gluten Free’s Web site.  And with that sort of piece of mind, we both knew that this would at least be a decent dining experience if nothing else.  The food, my friends, aside from the safety and the way gluten-free options were handled, was the highlight.

Upon entering the restaurant, we were greeted by a hostess who took us to a nice booth in a dimly lit dining room.  The entire restaurant was decorated in warm colors, reds and oranges especially, which are said to stimulate appetite.  It was working.  I was…for the first time all day…actually a little hungry.  We were left menus and our server came to our table to pour us some water and see if we wanted anything else to drink.  As I still felt dehydrated, I stuck purely with the water.  So did Cathy.

Then, we mentioned that I was medically gluten-free and the waiter said he would take my menu and return with one specifically for me.  Yes…their gluten-free menu.  I absolutely love when places have menus specifically for those who need to eat gluten-free.  It really puts my mind to ease to some extent.  What was even better was that this menu had more than just a few selections on them and many of the options were vegetarian.

Happy dance of joy.  The waiter gave me another moment to look over the options and I finally made my decision.

Adobo Grill's Guacamole (prepared table side)
Adobo Grill’s Guacamole (prepared table side)

First of all, both Cathy and I decided to split an appetizer of the Guacamole ($7.99).  What makes this guacamole a must-have is that it is prepared table side.  Yes.  It is made right before your very eyes.  You see everything that goes into it.  No need to question how it is made or anything.  And it was so much fun to see the woman roll the cart over with all the makings and a stone bowl.  She asked us how hot we wanted our guacamole.  Cathy said I like hot and she likes mild, so we’d settle on a medium.  The very gracious server nodded and began the art of table side guacamole preparation.  The best part was at the end, when she speedily sliced an avocado in half, hit the pit with the knife to remove it, then scooped it into the bowl with the rest of the fixings and…mashed it all together.  Then it was set on the table and we were left with our chips and ready to enjoy.  I spooned up a helping onto my plate and took a bite.

Rich.  Creamy.  Packed with flavor.  I loved the hit of lime juice which would follow up each bite.  It was one of the more delicious guacamoles that I have eaten.  I didn’t find it to pack any heat at all, which was good for Cathy…but I do like a bit of heat with mine.  But that was not an issue as the flavors were all there and none of them overpowered the rest.  I could taste everything.  I loved the chunkiness of the texture and how amazing it tasted when it all came together.  Love at first bite.

Adobo Grill's Enchiladas de Calabaza
Adobo Grill’s Enchiladas de Calabaza

For my entree, I chose the Enchiladas de Calabaza ($14.99).  It’s their vegetarian enchilada option on the menu.  Enchiladas just sounded like the perfect meal that night.  And now that my stomach wasn’t feeling so…blah…I was ready for something of actual sustenance.  The Enchiladas de Calabaza are corn tortillas packed with roasted butternut squash & mushrooms and then coated in creamy tomatillo salsa with cheese & red onion on top.  Sour cream usually accompanies this, but I’ve never been a fan so I asked that they not include it.  It came with a side of black beans.  A large serving of black beans to be exact.  But, I figured after the race…the protein was much needed.

Yummy.  No.  Really, really yummy!  What I loved about this enchilada was the various flavors that came out of each bite.  The butternut squash was sweet, but paired so well with the umami, earthly flavors of the mushrooms.  The sauce, the corn, the onion…the pico de gallo and the cheese all brought it together.  And when I would scoop up a bite with some of the seasoned and creamy black beans…it was magic.  Honestly.  I loved the fantastic, savory flavors that would emerge with each bite.  I was in love with this meal and devoured it all.  Dehydration and upset stomach be damned…this was fantastic food, bite-for-bite, and I was hungry for more.

For the record, Cathy enjoyed her Enchiladas de Mariscos, which are enchiladas filled with shrimp, tilapia, grilled peppers, corn and cheese and basted in fresh corn-chipotle salsa.  She also nixed the sour cream, but it came with the pico de gallo, a side of Mexican rice and a side of black beans ($14.99)

Well…I was actually quite full, but figured I needed something to celebrate with.  So when our server returned, Cathy and I inquired as to what would be gluten-free on the dessert menu.  The server said the Chocolate Tamal would be without the cookie/cake part.  But he would check on the rest.  When he returned, he said the Flan was gluten-free and Ice Cream was gluten-free.

Instead of sharing a dessert, Cathy and I decided we’d each order one.  I got the Flan ($4.99), which is a traditional vanilla custard with caramel sauce.  Cathy got the Chocolate Tamal ($5.99), which we thought would be done gluten-free, but it came out regular for her.  So I didn’t get to sample it.  But it looked fantastic…sort of a chocolate cake/cookie wrapped like a tamale and served with vanilla bean ice cream, chocolate sauce and dried cranberries.

This was the first time I ever had Flan.  And I was really impressed with it.  It felt light, despite being a custard.  The caramel sauce didn’t take away from the vanilla flavor.  It was used as more of a topping and garnish than anything.  And…there was a strawberry on top…which, naturally I saved for the very last bite.  I was full when I finished eating.  Stuffed, really.  But I found this meal to be well worth going to that extreme.  I don’t eat like that often, but my appetite was back with a vengeance and it was time to really celebrate getting through that difficult race.

Sure…the meal was pricey.  But we were eating in the heart of downtown Indianapolis.  It’s going to be pricey.  The important thing was I was able to eat there without feeling ill afterwards.  They took my gluten intolerance very seriously and provided me with a fantastic, safe dinner.  And after the rough day I had, it was just what I needed.  I felt full, but great as I meandered out the door after dinner and back to the hotel.

Would I return to Adobo Grill next time I’m in Indianapolis?  In a heartbeat.  Highly recommended for those who can’t have gluten…and for those who can.  As both my roomie and I enjoyed our meals and raved about them the entire time we were eating.  Authentic Mexican food done authentically right and to perfection.  Yeah…I’d eat there again.  No problem.

A little taste of France at Chez Fonfon in Birmingham, Alabama

Chez Fonfon, Birmingham, Alabama
Chez Fonfon, Birmingham, Alabama

Restaurant: Chez Fonfon, Birmingham, Alabama

Okay…I admit it.  When I go home to visit my parents, a beautiful French restaurant is not the first place we’d normally go for dinner.  Honestly.  French cuisine, while amazing and what most chef’s will be classically trained to prepare and cook, is not something I am overly familiar with.  I’ve eaten at one other French restaurant that I can recall, and that was Bouchon in Las Vegas.

But there is a story as to how I ended up sitting at a small round table with my roommate, my parents, and a nice couple my parents know through their work.  And it all started with James Beard.

Now…there are words I never thought I would be typing…but this is the pure and simple truth.  I was glancing through the 2012 James Beard Award nominations and ran across a restaurant that my dad had mentioned having lunch at a couple times with a rep he works with at his office.  Interesting.  So, I mentioned on Facebook that I was incredibly jealous that he was getting to eat at Highlands Bar and Grill, as it was up for a James Beard Award under the amazing skills of Executive Chef, Frank Stitt, who has received many accolades over the years for his restaurants and food.

This…is how it started.  My dad mentioned to the rep, Mr. Davis, that I had actually heard of the restaurant and the chef and had been singing the praises of both.  Before I knew it, a couple months of planning, and I was set to be in town and have dinner at Chez Fonfon, a sister restaurant to Highlands Bar and Grill, which was opened in 2000 by Chris Mancill, Frank Stitt and Pardis Stitt.  This restaurant has more of a cozy, casual French bistro flare to it and serves up classic, hearty French fare to match the beautiful decor.  Yes…Chez Fonfon boasts authentic French with its French Belle Epoque café tables 100 year old etched glass door from Lyons.  It really feels like you’re in the heart of Paris, Lyons or Nice, settling in to enjoy a little atmosphere and some great food.

So, that’s how I ended up here.  And now that I was here…I was ready to see what Frank Stitt and his kitchen staff could do for me – a gluten-free vegetarian.

I can tell you one thing…they handle food allergies quite well.  Upon settling in to eat, the waitress was informed by myself of my dietary restrictions.  She immediately had some suggestions as to what I could eat for an entree.  I already felt comfortable there.  So, the table ordered an appetizer of Escargots with Parsley and Shallot Butter ($8.75) and I set myself to deciding between having the chef create a delicious veggie tray or whether to try the dish on the menu that is both gluten-free and vegetarian.  Decisions…decisions.

In the end, I kept to the menu.  We actually had quite a variety going on with the orders from the menu.  Mr. and Mrs. Davis both ordered one of the fish dishes that was a special that night.  My mom decided on the Shrimp and Avocado Salad with Sauce Rémoulade ($14.75).  My roommate and my dad both got the Trout with Brown Butter, Capers and Brabant Potatoes ($18.75).  And, like I said…I kept to the menu and ordered the Omelette with Zucchini, Tomato, Basil and Comté ($13.50).

I love omelettes.  I eat them a lot.  I wish I were better at making them at home, because I would do it more often.  But mine turn into a egg scramble mostly…so getting a delicious omelette when I eat out is always awesome.

With the food prepared, the waitress began to bring out the plates.  All of them were fine-tuned and beautifully plated.  There was a place for everything.

My omelette came complete with a salad of greens and pommes frites on the side.  It was a large plate of food, but I was hungry and ready to dig in and see what Frank Stitt and the kitchen crew were made of.  After all, it’s not every day that I get to taste food prepared by such a highly regarded and chef.

The Omelette with Zucchini, Tomato, Basil and Comté was, in a word, delicious.  The eggs were prepared to the perfect airy fluffiness and stuffed to the max with the delicious cheese and vegetables.  It was silky rich and just…amazing with every bite.  There was no skimping on the filling in this omelette.  Each bite was full of every vegetable inside and it was seasoned to perfection.  Nothing bland about this egg dish.  Not at all.  The salad was lightly dressed and delicious.  It paired really well with the omelette.  I often found myself scooping up some of the greens onto the fork with a small bite of the omelette.  They paired very well.  And the pommes frites…just what I would expect from a French bistro.  Crispy, salty, and perfect.  But between the omelette and the salad, I was well full, so I only sampled from the pommes frites on my plate.

Everyone else was very content and quite pleased with their decision for dinner.  Every plate was cleaned.  The rest of the table enjoyed desserts, but there were no gluten-free options for me to have, so I passed.  It’s okay though, because my mom had baked me up a gluten-free brownie at home, so when I got back to their house, I dug into that and washed it down with some vanilla almond milk.  Not very French…but heavenly to me.  It was a perfect way to end a perfect dining experience.

So, was Chez Fonfon everything I hoped it would be and more?  You bet it was.  The service was fantastic.  Our waitress walked me through what would be safe to eat.  The food was fresh, warm, delicious.  The atmosphere was buzzing.  The place was crowded with a line waiting when we left.  That speaks very highly of this restaurant, which I was told turns tables quite steadily throughout the night.  I can see why.  And my company at that French bistro in Birmingham, Alabama…was the icing on the cake.  A perfect meal in a perfect setting.

And all because of James Beard.

And my dad…for arranging to make it all happen.

Chez Fonfon…you deserve every accolade written about you, your chef, your food, and your sister restaurants.  Because of the meal I had was any indication of what else is offered at the other establishments…then you’re really at the top of your game.  Birmingham, Alabama is lucky to have you.

French food in the heart of the South.  Yeah…that’s the life.  And it is très délicieux!

Kildare’s serves up full Irish experience with mediocre food

Kildare's Irish Pub, Columbus, Ohio
Kildare’s Irish Pub, Columbus, Ohio

Restaurant: Kildare’s Irish Pub, Columbus, Ohio

It was one of those risks you take when you try out a new restaurant.  You either get what you expect…or more…or it just falls short of everything you hoped it would be.

Being the Columbus, Ohio traveling fools we are (because…an awesome friend lives there…so travel has to happen), my roomie and I have pretty much pillaged every pub up that way.  Including ones just outside of Columbus or in neighboring areas.  But, it took a trip to the Dublin Irish Festival in Dublin, Ohio to discover Kildare’s Irish Pub, located in Columbus, Ohio.  How we overlooked this one I’ll never know…but it was an oversight we sought to correct.

To be honest, the original plan was to drive up to Medina, Ohio to dine at Sully’s (only the best Irish pub this side of the pond!), but after a late night at the Irish Festival the night before…none of us were really feeling energetic or spry enough for the drive there and back.  So, to keep the Irish theme alive, we decided to head to Kildare’s Irish Pub instead.  This way my roomie still got her fish and chips…I could figure out what I could have…and Jenn…well, I never know what Jenn will order.  She’s a sneaky one.

Anyway…finding Kildare’s wasn’t easy.  In fact…we drove past it, despite having directions.  The image on the internet showed a big red pub, reminiscent of Dublin Ireland’s very own Temple Bar.  What we didn’t realize was that the side of the pub was painted red and the wall facing the road…was blue.  But, we got there eventually, parked the car, and headed in.

In true pub fashion, you seat yourself.  We opted for a table near the back, where we could get a good look at everything.  Soon after settling in, the waitress came over to greet us, tell us a little about the pub, and see what we would like to drink.  Of important note with Kildare’s…98% of the decor is from Ireland.  Seriously.  We played a game where we tried to decide what 2% wasn’t.  Hey…you do these things while waiting on food.  When the waitress returned with drinks (water for me and Magners for my friends), she asked if we had any questions.  I told her I was a tricky one in that I was a gluten-free vegetarian…so I might need some menu guidance.

She told me that Kildare’s does fantastic with vegetarian…but not so much with gluten-free.  Hey…she was honest!  Anyway…with that in mind, she directed me toward the salad section.  She even suggested the Kildare’s Salad, which would be safe…as long as I got it without croutons/flatbread.  So…that’s what I got.  The Kildare’s Salad with a safe balsamic vinaigrette ($5.99).  My roommate, of course, ordered the fish and chips ($14.99) and Jenn went completely outside the box(ty)…and got the Philly Cheesesteak Boxty ($11.99).  As everything is made fresh at Kildare’s…we settled in to watch some Olympics on the televisions and chat about anything and everything…as we often do.

When food arrived…I was actually surprised at the serving sizes.  As my salad was only $5.99, I got a huge containing chopped Iceberg & Romaine lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes, red onions and julienne carrots.  The dressing was kept to the side so I could add it myself (thank you!).  It was a lot bigger than I imagined…but it looked fresh and delicious.  And it was…but there was nothing that really set this salad apart from one that I could make at home.  In fact…those are the usual suspects in a salad I make at home (minus the lettuce…as I’m a spinach girl).  So…yeah…not so hugely impressed with the salad, but it was fresh, crisp, and edible.  Nothing wrong with it…but…nothing that set it apart either.

My roommate got one plank of fish, which was slightly overdone on the tips.  With it…a good serving of fries.  Now, I’ve seen platters of fish and chips much larger than this one for the same price, but…it was actually in human portion sizes, so who is to complain about that, right?  And as for Jenn’s Philly Cheesesteak Boxty (thin sliced roast beef, American cheese, and onions rolled in an Irish Potato Pancake then drizzled with Cheese Whiz)…well, my roommate tried a bite and said she liked it better than the fish and chips.  So…there you have it.  But this gluten-free vegetarian was pretty much…limited to salad.

But I’m used to that.

Overall, we decided that the food wasn’t bad…it just didn’t really blow us away.  I love that in theory they try to keep things authentically Irish, giving a few meals an American twist (for those people who can’t step outside their food comfort zones).  However, none of us walked out of there raving about what to have the next time we happened to be in town.  In fact, we had already come up with the restaurant we want to eat at next time.

Good or bad…the staff is friendly, the atmosphere is straight out of Ireland, but the food…well…it was a bit of a letdown.

A show of gratitude for the staff, the chef, and the Skyight Bistro & Wine Bar at The Indianapolis Marriott East Hotel

I think every good deed should be praised and rewarded.  Honestly.  Because sometimes something unexpected can happen in the most unlikely of places.

Take for example my recent stay at The Indianapolis Marriott East Hotel.  I was in Indianapolis, Indiana for a convention and it was the first night of the event.  After a stressful drive up there (heavy traffic and then being the victim of a semi truck tire blow-out/tread shower), I got checked in, hauled in the luggage, and went to go get my badge and program from my roomie’s mom, who was attending, but staying at a hotel across the lot, not at the convention itself.

With that mission accomplished, my roomie and I turned our attention to other pressing matters – dinner.

We were hungry!

With opening ceremonies for the convention getting close, we decided to give the hotel restaurant a shot.  The Skylight Bistro & Wine Bar does not have a menu up online so we meandered over that way to glance at the one they had out at the host stand at the entrance of the Bistro.  I gave a quick overall glance to what was being offered, and it seemed that salad was once again going to be on my plate.

The host asked if he could help us, and a waiter just happened to meander over.  I explained my dietary restrictions – being a vegetarian and gluten-free.  He gave a nod, said that I could take my time looking over what they have to offer.  And then, after a pause, Mark, who ended up being our waiter that day, said that he would go back and talk to the chef to see if there is something that he could make for me that wouldn’t just be a salad.

I thanked him and he disappeared for a moment.  While he was gone, I decided on a salad that I could have in case that plan were to fall through.  But when Mark returned, he had happy news from the chef.  The chef happened to have gluten-free rice noodles in the kitchen.  And he could definitely work some vegetables in with that.  It’s been a long time since I have had that much happy!  We gave a nod and soon we were being seated in the plush seats of the Skyight Bistro & Wine Bar.

Mark went to retrieve our drink order (hydration – so water!) and when he returned, we were ready to order.  My roomie went off the beaten path…and got the BLT Sandwich which came with fries ($9.00).  As for me…I eyed the salad again, and decided that I’d be bold…and see what the chef could do for me.  So I said the vegetables and rice noodles would be awesome.  Mark then inquired if I would like a sauce with that.  I told him to ask the chef because not all sauces are safe for someone who can’t have gluten.  So, he gave a nod, took the order and went to put it in.  A moment later he returned to tell me the chef was going to cook the noodles in a vegetable broth and that way there would be some flavor throughout the dish.  He did, however, mention that our food would take a bit longer to come out because the chef would have to make mine completely from scratch.

I told him I was happy to wait.

And so…we waited.  It took, just over 20 minutes for our meals to be brought out to us.  My roomie looked quite happy to have food settled in front of her.  And her BLT sandwich looked really, really good.  As for me, a bowl was settled in front of me.  In it was the most fantastic, amazing looking Asian Noodle Soup I ever laid eyes on.  Huge.  The vegetables were steamed and mixed into the broth.  The rice noodles were cooked to perfection, laying in this fantastically seasoned vegetable broth.  And the chef even did up a beautiful little layering of vegetables and noodles to really make it look fine dining.

It was one of the most amazing things I had ever seen.

And so…as Mark went to retrieve a spoon for me, I took my fork and began tasting what I could spear.  The vegetables were cooked to perfection.  There were carrots (ribbons of them), mushrooms, asparagus, red peppers, and squash, beautifully chopped and included in the meal.  The portion…was much more than I expected.  I made my roommate take a taste and even she was happy for me.  I mean, everything was seasoned and done to perfection.  And all of this was created specifically for me…due to dietary restrictions.

There are few chefs who would step up to a challenge like that, but this one did.  And everything in that bowl worked.  It was one of the most fantastic soups I’ve had the honor of trying.  And, it was made specifically for me.  That dish is nowhere on the menu (but, it should be).  Yet, here is a shining example of a restaurant stepping up and taking charge of a dietary need.  More places should learn from this.  My meal was filling, delicious, and special.  I’ll always remember it…and I’ll forever recommend the Skylight Bistro & Wine Bar at the Indianapolis Marriott East now to anyone going into that area.  Brilliantly executed, stunning to look at, and savory.  This was just what I needed that night.

Best of all, despite having to create the dish on the fly, I was only charged $14.00 for my large bowl of gluten-free, vegetarian goodness.  Basically, I was charged the entree price on a Chicken Pasta.  Nice.

Like I said, every good deed should be praised.  Well, here is a shining example of restaurant staff stepping up to a challenge and conquering it.  I am forever grateful to Mark and the chef for really making my dining experience at the Skylight Bistro & Wine Bar one to remember.  I was blown away by the service, the care, the technique, and the food.

No simple salad for me…not this time.

Thank you.

Gluten-free Italian food done to beautiful perfection at Bella Notte Italian Trattoria in Lexington, Kentucky

Bella Notte Italian Trattoria, Lexington, Kentucky
Bella Notte Italian Trattoria, Lexington, Kentucky

Restaurant: Bella Notte Italian Trattoria, Lexington, Kentucky

Gluten-free and Italian food don’t always go hand-in-hand.  Believe me.  More than once I have relegated myself to the salad, but no croutons, please, at an Italian eaterie.  In fact, unless I hit up a local chain or one of the box chains that has a couple of gluten-free options (Olive Garden, Carrabbas), pasta is usually off my radar unless I make it myself at home.  And, unfortunately, much of the gluten-free options at the box chains are meat heavy…which doesn’t work for this vegetarian.

But, every now and again, you find a place that surprises you.

Bella Notte Italian Trattoria in Lexington, Kentucky, is one of those places.

I probably never would have given Bella Notte a second look if I were simply passing by on the road.  I tend not to notice Italian places anymore because most of them have nothing I can eat.  But I have this great app on my iPhone called Find Me Gluten Free and I used it to find somewhere I could eat after I ran in The Great Buffalo Chase 5K on the Fourth of July.  One of the places it returned was this little Italian Tratoria on Nicholasville Road in Lexington.

Bella Notte is a very unassuming looking building just off the main drag.  We arrived shortly after it opened for lunch.  It wasn’t very busy at the time, but by the time we left, it was starting to pick up.  I liked arriving before the crowd, especially with my dietary needs.  That way I could be certain that my waiter or waitress understood my food allergies.

Little did I know that I wouldn’t have even had to worry about it here.  The staff at Bella Notte knows their stuff.

We were greeted warmly at the door and escorted back to a table near the far wall and window.  The restaurant has a very homey feel to it.  Christmas lights line the trees inside, twinkling in the dimly lit setting.  The walls are a rustic yellow, but the area is set up like you might be eating out on a terrace in Tuscany.  From the ceiling, little yellow stars dangle overhead.  Bella Notte, as you may know, means ‘beautiful night’ in Italian.

We were seated and our waiter came over to get our drink orders while we looked over the menu.  I knew from my gluten-free app that this place had gluten-free pasta, so that was a plus.  When the waiter returned with our water, I let him know that I was medically gluten-free and he said they had a menu for that.

Boy…did they ever have a menu.  He returned only a moment later with a full page menu, that resembled their regular menu, only excluded items that were not safe for me to eat.  He also explained as he poured out the olive oil for the fresh, homemade bread my roommate could enjoy with her meal, that I should not feel compelled to sample the herbed oil as it does have gluten in it.  I was also informed that both soups of the day, a tomato basil and a corn soup, were both gluten-free.  I love a helpful staff.

After giving me a moment to decide on something off the gluten-free menu, he returned and we placed our orders.  My roommate went with the Chicken Parmesan ($9.00).  She had never tried Chicken Parmesan before and was intrigued.  This one included a hand-breaded chicken breast served over a spaghetti marinara, topped off with mozzarella and provolone cheeses and fresh basil.  With the option for either a soup or a salad, she opted for the Tomato Basil soup.

My waiter then turned his attention to me.  I ordered the Gluten-Free Penne Arrabianta ($7.00).  I was going to get the corn soup, but just to be certain I asked if it was also vegetarian and he said it was not.  So, instead I went with the Salad Rustica.  He took down the order and went to go put it in at the kitchen.

I was already feeling very confident about eating here.  The staff was definitely putting my mind to ease with their knowledge of the menu and the care they were taking with my order.  I released a huge sigh of relief and before I knew it, the soup and salad arrived at the table.

The Salad Rustica is a beautiful blend of seasonal fresh greens, lemon juice, extra virgin olive oil, tasted walnuts, and a side of the chef’s vinaigrette.  When it was set down in front of me, I was elated.  Not only was it a vibrant salad, but they put the dressing to the side instead of dowsing my salad in it.  I appreciated that more than ever because I’ve grown into not drowning my salad in dressing like I used to, and most restaurants tend to be heavy-handed on the dressing, especially a vinaigrette.  I dug in…and wow.  The walnuts are what really make this salad pop.  The greens were crispy, fresh, and perfect.  The waiter gave my salad some cracked black pepper on top and it really helped amp up the flavor in the greens.  The lemon juice and olive oil were the perfect seasonings for this salad.  And the vinaigrette was delicious.  The chef was right on point with those.

After leaving a clean salad bowl, the main dishes arrived at the table.

My bowl of Gluten-Free Penne Arrabiata looked absolutely fantastic.  My mouth was watering as I took a moment to look it over, take a picture on my cell phone and my camera, and finally picked up my fork and dug in.

Let me first say that when ordering gluten-free here, the gluten-free pasta is a fusilli.  So, the penne in my pasta was replaced with a perfect al dente gluten-free fusilli. pasta.  The rest of the dish remained true to the original.  The pasta was coated in a homemade marinara sauce with crushed red chilies, a chili-infused olive oil, lemon juice, and topped with fresh basil.  One bite, and I was hooked.  It was a delicious, spicy pasta.  One of the best arrabiata pastas I have ever had.  Honestly.  The red pepper was added to perfection.  And the olive oil that had been infused with chili really gave it the perfect kick that I look for when I order an arrabiata pasta.  I was beyond impressed.  And I ate the entire bowl of pasta, savoring each perfect gluten-free noodle.  Which, by the way, was amazing.  It didn’t crumble and fall apart on my fork or under the marinara.  It remained a perfect al dente throughout the entire meal.  Impressed doesn’t even begin to cover it.

We both were quite happy with our food and the service at Bella Notte in Lexington, Kentucky.  But, we had a 12:30 movie to catch at the cinema just up from the restaurant, so we didn’t linger nor grab a dessert.  It was okay though; we were both completely stuffed.  Our check was handed to us and I was quite happy to see that Bella Notte also does not charge you extra for ordering something gluten-free.  There was no upcharge for the gluten-free pasta or anything.  I felt like a normal customer and that, sometimes, is not an easy thing to come by as a gluten-free foodie.

Will I return to Bella Notte next time I’m in Lexington?  Of course.  I didn’t expect to find such care, such precision, and such knowledge at an Italian restaurant, but Bella Notte does everything right.  And the food was amazing.  So, if you are out and about in Lexington, Kentucky and looking for a great place to eat…check out Bella Notte.  Honestly, take my word on this one.  It’s a gem of a place that knows its food and happily caters to the gluten-free diner.

A beautiful dining experience at a beautiful restaurant…in the heart of Kentucky’s bluegrass region.  Bravo, Bella Notte.  Bravo.

Taking the guess work out of grocery shopping in Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Gluten-Free Trading Company, Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Gluten-Free Trading Company, Milwaukee, Wisconsin

I never thought I would say this, but…I LOVE MILWAUKEE!

I was there last weekend for the sole purpose of running in the Rock ‘N Sole Quarter Marathon.  It was quite a haul from my Southern Indiana home, but the race sounded like so much fun.  So…my roomie and I were Milwaukee bound.

As I have learned from past travel experiences…come prepared.  That’s exactly what I did.  I packed up a reusable grocery bag with gluten-free foods and snacks to keep at our hotel…just in case there was nothing I could really eat while in Milwaukee.

Heh.  I totally pegged the city wrong.

In fact, Milwaukee is the home of the happiest place on Earth for anyone gluten-free.  And that, my friends, is a completely gluten-free grocery store.  YES!  I kid you not.  What is this oasis of gluten-free goodies called?

The Gluten-Free Trading Company.

Gluten-Free Trading Company, Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Gluten-Free Trading Company, Milwaukee, Wisconsin

And it is located on South Chase Avenue in Milwaukee.  Incidentally, they have another store located in Pewaukee, Wisconsin as well.  Who would have thought Wisconsin would be a hub to embrace a gluten-free lifestyle.  Mind boggling…but true.

I think I might have squeed aloud when I walked into the doors of the Gluten-Free Trading Company.  Why?  Because this little shop has aisles and shelves and freezers and fridges that hold only gluten-free goods.  This means the guess work is taken out of it.  I didn’t have to sit there going…”well, it doesn’t contain gluten, but it shares equipment with products that have wheat…so…” (Yes…those always go on the shelf.  I’ll pay extra for the peace of mind of knowing that something is absolutely gluten-free).  I literally could go in there with a basket and just pile stuff in (and I just might have done that…twice…) and not have to second guess anything.  COMPLETELY 100% EVERYTHING GLUTEN-FREE!!

Pardon me while I do my happy dance of gluten-free joy.  It was like a nirvana of gluten-free awesomeness.  Seriously.  I didn’t even know where to begin as far as shopping went.  But what I did end up doing was snagging items I had  never seen where I live to try out.  Oh, I was one happy girl in that little grocery store.  So happy.  I think I was smiling like a loon the entire time as I was checking out products, deciding on what to try, and telling myself I could not buy one of everything…as much as I wanted to.

I went slightly over my budget.  I admit it.  But I was just so elated that such a place existed…where I could go grocery shopping and not spend half the time staring at ingredients, allergen information, and certain key words that clue me in on whether or not I can consume it or not.  It was something I haven’t been able to do in over a year.  And I loved every moment of it.

I loved it so much that I returned the following day…very close to their closing time to grab a few more things.  I was leaving to head home the following morning, so it was my last chance.  I was good and kept myself to a limited number of items.  Even better, I discovered that the Gluten-Free Trading Company also ships.  SO…if there is something I got that I love and still can’t get anywhere around here…they can get it to me.  Let the second happy dance of joy commence.

Check out their Web site:  Gluten-Free Trading Company

And if Milwaukee wasn’t already winning me over with the restaurants aplenty that do gluten-free foods (see previous blogs), the fact that they have TWO such places that do just gluten-free stuff is astounding.  I wanted to get over to A Gluten-Free Frenzy, which is a grocery store and café in Milwaukee, but they had closed by the time we made our way over there.  So…something to check out the next time.  From the Web site, I might just have to get a snack while visiting there too.

Milwaukee…you really surprised me.  Between being able to safely eat dinner somewhere and have an appetizer, entree, and dessert, and being able to grocery shop in not just one, but two places completely dedicated to gluten-free foods…it just won my heart.  I love you.

And I hope to come back and visit soon.

Now…what would it take to get a place like this near where I live, right?

*wistful sigh*

Gluten-Free pancakes are on the menu at Walker Bros. Original Pancake House in Glenview, Illinois

Restaurant: Walker Bros. Original Pancake House, Glenview, Illinois

What happens when you leave the hotel bright and early, heading home from a fantastic vacation, and you have breakfast on the brain?  You make a stop in the Chicago area for breakfast…that’s what happens.  And when in the Chicago area, some of the best breakfast around is served up at Walker Bros. The Original Pancake House.

Walker Bros. is apparently a Chicago-area landmark.  It’s first location was opened in 1960 in Wilmette.  Since then, other locations have opened, but standards have been kept high.  In fact, Walker Bros. was named as one of USA Today’s “Top Ten Pancake Restaurants in the Nation.”  Additionally, Zagat sang their praises and named them Chicago’s “best breakfast – bar none.” Apparently, Walker Bros. is the place to hit up when the breakfast craving hits.

And…that’s what we did

You know a place is good when you turn into a full parking lot.  And then…the line.  It was a long line…and a rather decent wait to get seated.  But the staff turned tables as fast as they could and we never really stood for too long somewhere.  One of the hostesses came through to find out how many people were in each party to assist with getting the line moving.  Oh, I was already excited about breakfast here.

We were finally seated, approximately 30-40 minutes after our arrival.  The restaurant has this nice, homey appeal to it.  Waiters wear white, button-up shirts and diner hats.  Yes…those little folded hats that were a standard in every diner in the 50s.  Talk about a throwback!  The Glenview location is designed with solid oak, brass lamps, and stained glass.  It’s beautiful.  And bustling.

We were given water and given some time to peruse the menu.  And there…a shining beacon on the pancake page…was gluten-free pancakes.  I was sold.  FINALLY…no omelets or eggs.  I could get something that I normally can’t enjoy while out at a breakfast place.

We placed our orders.  Cathy treated herself to one of the standards that Walker Bros. is known for – Three Little Pigs In A Blanket ($7.25), which is their own house-made sausage wrapped in fluffy pancakes, dusted with powdered sugar, and served with whipped butter and syrup.  As for me…I had to order the Gluten-Free Pancakes ($7.25), which comes with whipped butter and syrup.

I was practically giddy with anticipation over these pancakes…for real!  I don’t think I shut up about them as we waited on our order to arrive at our table.  I got really excited when the little dishes of maple syrup arrived.  Our food wasn’t far behind.

And holy flap-jacks, Batman…you get your money’s worth from the menu.  My very large plate was filled with six fluffy gluten-free pancakes.  Yes…six.  Holy Moses.  They were perfectly cooked up too, with that beautiful golden crust on the outside.  I sparingly spread a bit of the butter over a couple of the pancakes, poured a touch of syrup over them, took a breath, and sliced through one with the edge of my fork.  A moment later, I was enjoying the taste of pancakes…not prepared by me for a change.

The Gluten-Free Pancakes from Walker Bros. are light and fluffy for sure.  They have the crunch of the outer, golden crust that I love when pancakes are done right.  And the best part is…they are gluten-free, wheat free and peanut free.  So…safe to eat if you have any of those allergens.  Nothing is off with the taste.  They are fantastic, reminding me of what classic buttermilk pancakes were like.  Man, I’ve missed being able to have pancakes out at these places known for breakfast food.

Could I eat all six pancakes?  No.  But I managed more than I expected.  I was caught up in the taste, texture, and sheer brilliance of the Gluten-Free Pancakes.  Walker Bros. managed to turn out a plate of pancakes that tasted like classic buttermilk pancakes…none of this cornmeal business…this was a classic pancake…minus the gluten.  And yes…it made me so happy to be eating there.

When food can put a smile on your face, leave you satisfied, and just be fantastic…then something is being done right.  Walker Bros. definitely sets a high standard for brunch places and pancake houses.  They beat out any franchise or chain…hands down.  It’s obvious they respect the products they put out and want to serve the best to every customer.  The service was fantastic…the food…even better.

If you find yourself traveling through the Chicago area and a hankering for breakfast (no matter what time of day…they are open until 9:30 p.m.) hits…find a Walker Bros.  I mean it.  I will forever visit here because I know I can get amazing food that works with my food allergies.  And…hello…I can eat pancakes!!

WINNING!

Best.  Breakfast.  Ever.

Get a scoop of Milwaukee’s best ice cream at Babe’s Ice Cream

Babe's Ice Cream, Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Babe’s Ice Cream, Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Restaurant: Babe’s Ice Cream, Milwaukee, Wisconsin

There are two certainties in life when I travel.  One is that I will find a pub to dine at.  The other is that I will split a banana split with my roommate.  Why?  Because that’s just how I roll, friends.  And a trip should always be accompanied by good food and an ice cream treat.  Worry about your figure another time.  Ice cream is to be enjoyed.

So, after a long day of seeing the running in a Quarter Marathon, hiking down to the beach of Lake Michigan, dining at a great pub, shopping, seeing the sights…it was starting to get late…and my roommate and I wanted a sweet, cold treat to mark the end of a fantastic day and put some food in our now hungry bodies.  Let’s face it…we earned it.

Before even leaving for Milwaukee, Wisconsin, I was already searching for our place to treat ourselves to a banana split.  When all was said and done, I settled with Babe’s Ice Cream on South Kinnickinnik Avenue in Milwaukee.  We ended up at a fantastic place.  Babe’s is family owned and operated, which is always a plus.  And they offer a high, fine standard of ice cream, which you can get by the scoop…or in a sundae treat.

For us…it was all about the banana split ($6.95).

With Babe’s banana split, you get to choose your ice cream flavors to go over your split banana.  We kept it to the standard…vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry.  Then you get to choose three toppings.  We once again kept it to the usual suspects: strawberry, pineapple, hot fudge.  And the whipped cream (made in house) can either be vanilla or chocolate.  We stayed with vanilla.  All of that topped off with three cherries.  It looked divine.

It was a hot day, so I quickly took pictures of the masterpiece and then, we raised our spoons and dug in.  Wow.  The ice cream was really good.  The vanilla was your standard vanilla.  Nothing special.  The strawberry was pretty good too.  But the star of the banana split was the dark chocolate scoop in the center.  In fact, it was the scoop that lasted the longest because my roomie and I were trying to savor that one.  Best chocolate ice cream I have had…anywhere.  And trust me, friends…I eat a lot of chocolate ice cream.  Especially when it is dark chocolate!  I don’t eat much whipped cream, but my roommate encouraged me to have a taste of the vanilla whipped cream.  That…was a soft, amazing bite.  Very creamy and amazing with the flavor.

We were totally impressed with Babe’s Ice Cream.  The staff was awesome.  They loved talking to us about where we were from.  Why we were in town.  And our obsession with banana splits.  A customer came over to take a picture of our sundae because she said her boyfriend claims pineapple doesn’t go on a banana split and she wanted to prove him wrong.  DUH!  The pineapple topping is a staple on a banana split.  Everyone knows that!!

The atmosphere was really great.  Very relaxed.  We sat there, talked, and enjoyed our ice cream to the fullest.  And when we left…we were full, content, and happy.

That’s what ice cream should do for you.  That means you’ve had a good ice cream experience.

While Milwaukee is the home of frozen custard, which is delicious in and of it’s own right, I encourage you, if visiting, to seek out Babe’s Ice Cream and treat yourself to one of their amazing ice creams.  Either just have a scoop or enjoy one of their signature sundaes.  In the end…you’ll find yourself a happier person who just enjoyed some of the best ice cream there is in Milwaukee.  Trust me.  It’s worth it.  Spoil that diet for one day.  It’s okay.
