When it comes to food, nothing completes me more than any sort of nut butter.  Peanut butter, almond butter, cashew butter, sunflower seed butter (technically, not a nut butter…but close enough!), etc.  I love them.  Give me any flavor (add in honey, chocolate, coconut) too.  I love it.  It is, perhaps, my ultimate comfort and snack food.  When I’m stressed out, I just want a spoon and the nearest container of peanut butter.  No joke.

For awhile now, I’ve noticed and heard of a brand of nut butter that contains seven different nuts and seeds.  Needless to say, I knew a few people who swore by this stuff.  Loved this stuff.  And…as chance would have it…I found this stuff at my local Whole Foods Market.

Problem…it was between $12.99 – $17.99 a jar.  And, as much as I love nut butters…even I couldn’t justify spending that much on a simple (seven variety) peanut butter.  As much as it intrigued me.

Until…it went on sale.  Granted, the original crunchy is in the lower end ($12.99) regular price, but it was on sale for $9.99 one day I was in Whole Foods.  I still have money on a gift card I received for Christmas (best gift ever!), so I figured…why not?  I wouldn’t find it any cheaper.  I made my purchase and never felt one iota of remorse.  YAY!  Expensive peanut butter.  Now I’m living large.

So what is it about Nuttzo?  Nuttzo is a gourmet nut and seed butter that, each variety, contains seven different nuts and seeds.  It is billed as the healthiest and most unique super-butter on the planet.  They have three different flavors…available in the crunchy and smooth varieties: original, power fuel with chia, and Peruvian dark chocolate.  Said to be, perhaps, the next big next big thing in nut butter.  They are easy to spot too…standing upside down on the shelf.  Why upside down?  Because they are a little “nuttzo.”  Heh.  Actually, it’s because all the oils that naturally separate in natural peanut butters will now be at the bottom of the jar and not the top.  Open it without the mess.  YAY!  All of the Nuttzo flavors and products are 100% organic, contain no added sugars or oils, are high in healthy fats and protein, contain flax in every flavor for your daily Omega 3 ALA’s, are gluten-free certified, non-GMO certified, and kosher certified.

I love it already.  Good to know there are ways for a gluten-free. dairy-free, vegetarian to get those important Omega 3’s.

So, while the price had me doubting my purchase…on Sunday, I needed a light lunch (as I had made an epic breakfast and would be making an epic dinner!), so my roommate suggested open face peanut butter sandwiches.  I said, “Should we try the expensive peanut butter?”  She said that it had to happen sometime.  So…down from the top shelf of the pantry my jar of Nuttzo Original Crunchy Seven Nut & Seed Butter came.  I flipped the jar over, opened it up, looked inside and the chunky, nutty and seedy goodness, and gave it a swirl.  I doled up spoonfuls for my roomie and I to “sample” while I put a schmear of it on two pieces of gluten-free toast.

My roomie thought the honey I was going to drizzle on top would make it better.  Me…I was quite happy with all the different things going on in the Nuttzo.  I love smooth peanut butter, but chunky peanut butter…that’s another level.  And this…this is the supreme being…the god of all crunchy and chunky nut butters.  You actually have, swimming in this smooth sea of nutty goodness, chunks of cashews and peanuts and the other nuts (which I will get to), not to mention flax seeds and sunflower seeds, just adding to the texture.  Happy day.  I loved it straight off the spoon.  I loved it spread across a toasted slice of gluten-free bread.  I loved it driizzled with honey.  The only thing I don’t love about it is the steep price tag.  But with all those expensive nuts and seeds inside…I can see why that’s the case.  It just means that if I decide to splurge on nut butter…it will happen only once or twice a year.  This stuff is fantastic…but it is pricey.  Like…I could buy 13 individual cups of Greek yogurt for the price of one jar of this nut butter.  Is it worth it…yeah.  I think it is.  I mean, what’s not to love about something that excites your palate and is smooth and chunky and gritty and rich and tasty and just everything you want from a nut butter all in one?  Absolute nothing.  Except Nuttzo.

Granted…I have a great Vitamix now.  I can probably make this myself for a lot less…but sometimes…convenience wins out.

Let’s talk about ingredients, shall we?  With nut butters you usually have 1 to 2 ingredients.  Well, if you buy organic and natural, like I do.  This is that…but loaded with nuts and seeds.  In fact, the Nuttzo Original Crunchy Seven Nut & Seed Butter is made up of organic peanuts, organic cashews, organic almonds, organic flax  seeds, organic brazil nuts, organic hazelnuts, organic sunflower seeds, sea salt.  LOTS of flavorful nuts and seeds…all that give it this fantastic flavor, sweetness, and texture.  All without adding unnecessary things like sugar.  LOVE!!

As far as nutrition information goes, this is one very super-nutritious, high protein, amazing nut butter.  One serving, of the Nuttzo Original Crunchy Seven Nut & Seed Butter is 2 tablespoons.  This serving will provide you with 180 calories, 16 grams (healthy) fat, 70 mg sodium, 7 grams carbohydrates, 1 gram sugar, 3 grams fiber, and 7 grams of protein.  Like I said…powerhouse.  This nut butter, for someone with my dietary restrictions, is definitely worth the cost.  Heck, it’s worth it’s weight in gold!!

Love comes in so many different forms.  When you’re an athlete with food allergies, sometimes love is as simple as a jar of expensive nut butter called Nuttzo.  I might be “Nuttzo” for being willing to pay for said nut and seed butter, but this gives me so many nutrients in just a serving that I think it’s worth it.  Bought it on a whim, scoffed a little at the price, loved it when I tried it…now…completely obsessed.  It’s hidden so I just don’t take a spoon and eat the entire jar.  Because, trust me, it would happen.

It was Easter Sunday and I woke up early.  I haven’t been sleeping well due to bouts of chronic pain in my back and hip.  So, I got out of bed and came out to the living room to do my stretches assigned to me by my physical therapist.  It was as I started doing these that I thought to myself:

“Self…what are we having for breakfast this beautiful Easter morning?”

Since I am currently in a state of no running at all…I had plenty of time to come up with something.  And for some strange reason, I recalled having two bags of Mina’s Purely Divine Gluten Free Bread Mix in my pantry.  I bought these and a chocolate cake mix (which I have used already and didn’t review because I never tried the finish product…I made it for someone else…so now I have to purchase another bag) on Manager’s Special at my local grocery store…for $1.99.  How fantastic is that?

I knew very little about the Mina’s Purely Divine products when I bought them, just that I had seen them featured in ads in my gluten-free magazines.  That was the only familiarity I had with them.  So, with the recollection and the realization that I had two pouches of the Gluten-Free Allergen-Friendly Bread Mix in my pantry…I thought…

Bagels.

Because when I already fail at baking up gluten-free bread more often than I succeed…why not bake bagels.  Because that is SO much easier! *SARCASM*

That being said…I had it in my head now to make them.  It was going to either end well…or be a complete and epic fail.  It wouldn’t be my first.  So, while the roomie was still slumbering in her room…I went into the kitchen and plucked one of the bags of Mina’s Purely Divine Gluten Free Bread Mix off the shelf and set out to work.

Long story short…for my first time making bagels (and gluten-free bagels at that!)…this worked wonderfully.  They didn’t rise as much as I had hoped they would, but they did rise some in the 30 minutes I gave them to just sit.  I think next time I’m going to try the oven on warm thing that a friend suggested and see if it makes any sort of distance.  They held up to boiling in the water and even the actual baking.  Totally impressed.  But the real challenge was going to be in the taste.

By the time the bagels were in the oven and baking (given a little bit of egg wash over the top and a sprinkling of the “everything spice” that I picked up in Charleston, SC, the roomie had emerged and was ready for some brekkies.  I told her that breakfast was currently in the oven…and I would have it ready once the timer went off.  It was already starting to smell amazing, so when she asked what it was, I actually told her.

Bagels.

She looked really surprised.  “You made bagels?!”  You see…she has suffered through more than one epic gluten-free homemade bread loaf fail…so I wasn’t insulted at all.  I nodded and as I pulled them out of the oven, called her over to take a look.  They were perfectly golden on the outside.  Fresh and hot out of the oven, I didn’t want to slice into them so just put some vegan cream cheese in a bowl and said we’d dip (kind of how I used to eat soft pretzels).  So, onto some plates the bagels went while the rest cooled on the pan.  I handed a plate and bowl of the cream cheese over to her and went to get my own.  She started her cry of “hot, hot, hot!” as she broke it open and steam from the fresh bagels swirled up from the little breakfast goodie.  She took a bite and said, “It tastes like a bagel!”

Now, she’s had Everything Bagels from some of the top-flight bakeries in New York City…and she seemed quite content to dive into my first attempt at ever making bagels.  Trust me…she’s quite the critic and if she doesn’t like something…she’ll say so.  But she thought the texture and the flavor were spot on.  And after I got settled to try it for myself…I totally agreed.  As a New Yorker, bagels were a way of life growing up.  I still love them, but am often relegated to getting the frozen versions from Udi’s (as they are the only gluten-free bagels outside of Jennifer’s Way in NYC that have come close to tasting like the real thing!)…which is fine in a pinch.  But these…these were mine.  And they wouldn’t have been possible without Mina’s Purely Divine Gluten Free Bread Mix, for sure.

Truth…I can’t wait to make these again with the other batch.  Maybe get a bit more rise out of them so that middle gets all fluffy and amazing.  Cathy said these were very reminiscent of the ones we ate at Jennifer’s Way back in March, which I took as a high compliment as my first bite of one of Jennifer’s Way bagels made me cry.  Good tears.  This mix worked beautifully and made amazing bagels.  Talk about taking a risk and having it pay off in the end.

Let’s discuss the ingredients in Mina’s Purely Divine Gluten Free Bread Mix.  This mix is made up of organic rice flour, potato starch, organic cassava starch, organic sorghum flour, arrowroot starch, rice flour, teff flour, sea salt, yeast, xanthan gum, and guar gum.

As far as nutrition goes, the Mina’s Purely Divine Gluten Free Bread Mix contains about 13 servings, with each serving being about 1/4 cup.  A serving will provide 100 calories, 0 grams of fat, 0 mg cholesterol, 50 mg sodium, 23 grams carbohydrates, 4 grams of sugar, 1 gram fiber, and 1 gram protein.  That’s really good for a bread mix.  I am very impressed.

If you have access to Mina’s Purely Divine Gluten Free Bread Mix…and feel like taking on a challenge, go ahead…whip up your own homemade gluten-free bagels!!  You’ll be very impressed with the results.

Recipe: Gluten Free Everything Bagels

Servings: 6-12 (I made 8 good-sized bagels!)
Time: Prep 1 hour; Bake 18-20 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 1 package, approx. 2⅔ cups Mina’s Purely Divine Gluten Free Bread Mix
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 2¼ tsp yeast (included)
  • 1 tsp + 1 Tbsp sugar, divided
  • 2 tsp vegetable oil
  • 2 Tbsp molasses
  • 3 quarts water
  • 1 egg white, whisked (optional)
  • sesame or poppy seeds for toppings (optional)

Directions:

Add to mixer bowl, 1 cup warm water, 1 tsp of sugar and the yeast. Whisk and let rest for 10 minutes.

Add to yeast mixture: 1 cup of bread mix, the rest of the sugar, the oil, the molasses, and mix well.

Add last 1-2/3 cups of bread mix. Mix on medium high for 5 minutes.

Scrape out on a lightly oiled surface. Form dough into a log. Cut into 6 large or 12 small pieces. (I went for the middle and did 8 perfect size pieces). Roll each piece with lightly oiled hands into a 6″ rope. Shape in a circle, crimping edges.

Arrange bagels on parchment paper. Cover with oiled plastic wrap. Let rise in warm draft free area for 30 minutes. Dough will be tender at this point after the initial rise.

Preheat oven to 450 degrees F.

Bring 3 quarts of water to a slow boil. Gently using oiled hands, or spatula, drop each bagel, one at a time, into the water. Boil in small batches, do not crowd. Simmer for 30 seconds on each side, flip over once. Drain on rack for 5 minutes.

Brush with whisked egg white (optional) and sprinkle the toppings on at this point, if using.

Bake on a lightly greased cookie sheet for 20 to 25 minutes for large bagels and 15 minutes for small bagels. (It took mine 18 minutes…so if you do 8…go with that!)

Cool on rack.

I was so impressed with the way Mina’s Purely Divine Gluten Free Bread Mix baked up perfect, delicious bagels. And with this being my first time ever attempting such a culinary feat…well…it just made me want to improve on it.

That being said…WOW!!  Total and complete WOW!!  Find Mina’s Purely Divine Gluten Free Bread Mix and, seriously, give this recipe a try.  I am dying to do it all over again!  Maybe even improve on it some.  We shall see!

It was Whole Foods and Cuisine Cube that got me hooked on the amazing and healthy granola that I have more than indulged in since first discovering it in the breakfast aisle at my local Whole Foods.  This granola is Jessica’s Natural Foods.  I haven’t met one of her granola’s that I haven’t liked.  And the one I am reviewing today is my third variety I have tried.

This speaks very highly of any product when I keep going back to the brand.  And let me tell you, when it comes to gluten-free granola, Jessica’s Natural Foods does it right.  You’ll want to eat it straight out of the bag.  I’ve done it…while sprinkling it on top of my fruit and Greek yogurt parfaits.

As stated above, the granola I chose this time around was the Gluten Free Chocolate Hazelnut Granola from Jessica’s Natural Foods.  Jessica’s Natural Foods was started by Jessica Mindell, an avid baker with a background in engineering.  Back in 2009, her husband discovered that he was gluten-intolerant and said that he missed oat-based granola.  Once Mindell was able to find gluten-free oats and a certified gluten-free facility, she was able to launch her healthy, delicious granola.  Since then, her bags of granola have expanded to over 25 states.  Mindell’s passion for natural foods means that she always bakes with simple, pure ingredients and keeps health and nutrition at the forefront of her products.  How can you not love that?

Originally called Motor City Crunch, Jessica’s Natural Foods Gluten Free Chocolate Hazelnut Granola is just what it sounds like.  Toasted oats that are loaded with cocoa powder, chocolate chips, and hazelnuts.  Think…Nutella in gluten-free granola form.  Does that peek your interest?  It did mine!  This was the original flavor that I had wanted to try when my roomie (Cathy) and I first discovered this brand at Whole Foods.  It was the flavor she waved at me, then selected a different flavor in the end.  Talk about a tease.  That wasn’t happening this time.  When we needed granola to go with the 2 pounds of fresh strawberries we received from the CSA bin, I said that the Chocolate Hazelnut Granola from Jessica’s Natural Foods would be the perfect match.  Cathy couldn’t argue with that.

So…this week’s breakfast…Greek yogurt, fruit and granola parfaits.  One of my favorite things in life.  For real.  Building these is simple.  A little granola on the bottom, then some Greek yogurt, a drizzle of honey or agave, fresh berries.  Repeat.  Then top off the last of it with the granola and honey/agave.  It makes a filling, fresh, nutritious, and amazing breakfast.  Trust me.

And, let me tell you, I was completely right about this granola.  It is exceptional.  I mean, completely indulgent and sinful.  But, it isn’t bad for you at all.  The rolled oats are toasted to a great crunchy texture, and coated with chocolate.  Hazelnuts and semi-sweet chocolate chips are incorporated throughout.  And when the chocolate chips hit your tongue, they melt.  It is…A-MAZ-ING!  I can’t think of a time I fell so in love with the flavor of the granola.  But this…this was true love.  Love at first bite.  Love in a Nutella-like formation.  Love for a food might seem strange, but, until you taste what I have, you won’t know the true level of obsession you might develop for a granola.  Honestly.  The absolute best.  THE BEST I have ever tasted.  I would eat it in a bowl on its own, on a parfait, over dairy-free ice cream, by the handful, spoonful, or 1/4 cup full.  If you love chocolate…this will satisfy your tastebuds.  Bite after bite after bite.

Let’s discuss the ingredients that go into Jessica’s Natural Foods Gluten Free Chocolate Hazelnut Granola.  This granola is made from certified gluten-free rolled oats, semi-sweet chocolate chips, organic honey, brown sugar, expeller pressed sunflower oil, hazelnuts, ground flax seed, coconut, cocoa powder, maple syrup, pure vanilla extract, sea salt, cinnamon, and tocopherols (natural vitamin E).  This granola is gluten free, cholesterol free, kosher, and non-GMO.

As for nutrition, for being a chocolate based granola…this is actually really, really impressive.  A serving of Jessica’s Natural Foods Gluten Free Chocolate Hazelnut Granola is 1/4 cup.  This serving will provide 135 calories and 7 grams of fat.  This granola will provide you with 30 mg sodium and 7 grams of sugar.  That’s amazing for a granola.  You will also be consuming 18 grams carbohydrates, 3 grams of fiber and 3 grams of protein.  So, yes…you will feel full after eating it.  As this is lower in sugar than most granola, that helps keep you satiated as well.

Love is chocolate.  Breakfast love is chocolate for breakfast.  Jessica’s Natural Foods totally gets this and understands that sometimes we just want something decadent, but healthy, for breakfast.  And that is what you get in Jessica’s Natural Foods Gluten Free Chocolate Hazelnut Granola.  It’s a healthy, filling treat that will definitely liven up your breakfast, your snack, your lunch, your dinner, or even your dessert.  Jessica’s Natural Foods does it right…and nothing is more right than this Chocolate Hazelnut Granola.

It was October 2014 and I was entering the great land of Trader Joe’s in Louisville, Kentucky.  I had just passed the big center display of bananas when my gaze fell upon an end cap that was holding a bunch of pumpkin goodness.  I love anything pumpkin.  This is no secret.  And a Trader Joe’s mix with pumpkin pancake-y goodness?  HELLO!  Sign me up.

I snagged a box of it and gave the sad Celiac eyes to my roommate.  And…yes…we fit them into the budget.  Sad Celiac eyes work wonders!!  So, checkout was complete.  And fall turned into winter.  And then spring came around.  And while I had been making things for breakfast…pancakes even…I had other mixes and flour blends that had to be used first.  But, as the great kitchen pantry purge continues…Trader Joe’s Gluten Free Pumpkin Pancake Mix was up to bat today!

So, this morning, I decided to haul out the Mickey (Mouse) waffle maker and make some pancake waffles.  Why?  Because waffles are delicious and fun…and these are shaped like Mickey.  They win.  Always.  I mean, pancakes probably would have been less labor intensive but…I was craving waffles for awhile.  In fact, I sort of promised my roommate I’d make waffles after we went to our gluten free bakery Saturday morning for breakfast and she lamented that she wished they still offered their gluten free waffles (and pancakes).  So, a promise is a promise.

Mixing up the Trader Joe’s Gluten Free Pancake Mix is super easy.  Simply get out a bowl and crack an egg inside.  Then, add 2 tablespoons of melted butter (or oil).  I melted down 2 tablespoons of Earth Balance.  Then, whisk them together.  Add in 2/3-cup of water plus 2 additional tablespoons and whisk that up as well.  Then, scoop out a cup of the Trader Joe’s Gluten Free Pumpkin Pancake Mix and add it to the wet ingredients.  Mix until just combined.  It’s okay if it’s a little lumpy.

So easy.  I had all that done by the time my roommate hauled herself out of her room.  Perfect timing.  I ladled the mix into the waffle maker and closed the lid, allowing it to cook to that perfect crusty outside, soft inside consistency.  It usually takes about five minutes to get there.  And while that was working, I warmed up some pure maple syrup to pour over it.  YUMMY!  I lifted the lid of the waffle maker when the steam subsided and lo and behold…the perfect pumpkin-y gluten-free waffle shaped like Mickey Mouse.  YES!  I was already feeling good about this mix.  I slathered it up with some Earth Balance spread and then dowsed it in some maple syrup.  I then got my own waffle working and prepared to do the same thing.  Once again, the perfect waffle emerged, with this golden crust on the outside.  I was elated.  As the third (and final) waffle (now in the freezer) was working, I settled in to enjoy my breakfast.

So…it was awesome.  Let me just say that.  Some flour mixes and pancake mixes don’t get that golden crust on the outside, but Trader Joe’s managed it to perfection with this mix.  It had the perfect amount of pumpkin spice flavor.  Not too much.  And not too little (although my roomie says that she didn’t get much pumpkin).  I disagree with the roomie and think that the amount of pumpkin flavor was spot on.  As I am the pumpkin freak…I know best.  The crust on the outside was crisp and crunchy and the inside of the waffle was light and soft and just…so amazing.  I was in love with each bite.  I may have hoovered it, using the last bite to mop up any extra syrup lingering on the plate.  Really, very impressed.

The Trader Joe’s Gluten Free Pumpkin Pancake Mix was a new product that was introduced last October due to numerous requests from their fans of the original Trader Joe’s Pumpkin Pancake Mix, who had found themselves now eating a gluten-free diet.  The Trader Joe’s peeps went to work for months to get the right texture (no soggy, heavy pancakes allowed) and finally it it spot on, even getting the seasoning right to bring that warm fall-ish feeling to the finished product.  The recipe for the pumpkin pancakes (the one I listed above) was on the side of the box to make sure you succeeded on your pumpkin pancake quest.  They did well.  They did very well.

The Trader Joe’s Gluten Free Pumpkin Pancake Mix is made from white rice flour, potato starch, cane sugar, dehydrated pumpkin flakes, buttermilk powder, tapioca flour, molasses powder, baking powder, sea salt, organic vanilla flavor, expeller pressed canola oil, ground cinnamon, ground allspice, ground ginger, xanthan gum, annatto for color, and ground nutmeg.  This mix is gluten-free and cholesterol free.

A serving of Trader Joe’s Gluten Free Pumpkin Pancake Mix is 1/3 cup dry mix or 2 pancakes prepared.  A serving of the mix will provide 130 calories and 0.5 grams of fat.  It contains 250 mg sodium and 7 grams of sugar.  The dry mix will also give you 29 carbohydrates, 1 gram of fiber, and 2 grams of protein.  When it is prepared as per the instructions on the side of the box, you will be taking in 210 calories and 8 grams of fat.  You will be taking in 70 mg cholesterol, 270 mg sodium, and 7 sugars.  Prepared, you will have29 grams of carbohydrates, 1 gram of fiber and 4 grams of protein.

Honestly, it is one of the better gluten-free pancakes mixes out there.  I was above and beyond happy with the way my Mickey waffles came out.  Not only were these full of perfect pumpkin flavor, they were crispy and soft and the texture was right where it needed to be.  Trader Joe’s definitely nailed the gluten-free pumpkin goodness in these.  I hope this mix is back on the shelves this upcoming fall.  Total yum!

You might be able to tell that I’m on a bit of a sweet potato kick.  And who can blame me?  Sweet potatoes are nutritional powerhouses.  I mean, this one food is an excellent source of B6 vitamins and potassium, but in addition to that, you will be provided with over 400% of your daily needs for Vitamin A and 37% Vitamin C.  Sweet potatoes are a great source of beta-carotene, which has been shown to reduce risk of developing certain types of cancer, offers protection against asthma and heart disease as well.  Sweet potatoes are one of my favorite plant powerhouses when it comes to foods I consume often.

While I love to incorporate baked sweet potatoes into recipes or stuff them with healthy avocado and some onion and eat them fresh out of the oven…I recently found my stash of frozen sweet potato pancakes in my freezer.  I knew they were there, I just made no effort to actually pull them out to eat.  Go figure.  But with a lack of fresh produce coming in from my bin these last couple of weeks, I have been doing some slimming down on what I have in my pantry and my fridge and freezer.  Last week, I ate a different variety of sweet potato pancakes, more like the familiar pancakes I would settle in to at breakfast.

And that’s one of the first things I noticed about the Gluten Free Sweet Potato Pancakes from Dr. Praeger’s Sensible Foods.  They look more like hash browns than your breakfast pancakes.  Which, is fine by me, for sure.  While I liked the Julian’s Recipe version, I found that they tasted a bit…odd.  But that wasn’t the case with the ones from Dr. Praeger’s.

Dr. Praeger’s Sensible Foods began in 1994, when a New Jersey cardiothoracic surgeon, Dr. Peter Praeger, and his medical partner, Dr. Eric Somberg, helped keep a family business alive by purchasing Ungar’s Gefilte Fish, a popular kosher food company within the Jewish community.  The two doctors set out on a mission – to introduce people to nutritious food that actually tasted great.  They opted to keep the Ungar’s brand, but also developed Dr. Praeger’s Sensible Foods to include all natural and convenient (and wow…they are convenient!) frozen products that could appeal and draw in a wider consumer based.  This family owned and operated company has grown into a leader in the all-natural, vegetarian, gluten-free, vegan, and kosher frozen food categories, with products ranging from veggie burgers to home-style veggie cakes, to breaded fish items, and veggie-packed goodies for children too in their “Kid’s Littles” line, and many more options.  The Dr. Praeger’s items are found in the frozen or ethnic foods section of most retailers, but certainly in most natural food stores.

I’m quite familiar with the Dr. Praeger’s brand.  In fact, I have enjoyed some of the Kid’s Littles (hey…I’m a kid at heart!) and have tried the veggie burgers as well…and have loved everything I have tried.  But, I won’t lie…I was beyond intrigued by the Gluten Free Sweet Potato Pancakes when I spotted them at Whole Foods awhile back.  This morning, as I was packing like a wild woman to head out to New York City for some birthday shenanigans with my roommate (her birthday is tomorrow), as well as a possible race (depending on my hip), I needed something that would be filling, yet easy to prepare.  I hit up my pantry, but all the mixes just seemed time consuming.  My freezer was next, and the final bit of breakfast-like food (hey…pancakes are pancakes…even if they are savory!) caught my attention when I spotted the white box for Dr. Praeger’s Sensible Foods Gluten Free Sweet Potato Pancakes.  SCORE!

I pulled out four of the individually wrapped pancakes (think of a large hash brown, and you get the basic size and thickness of these pancakes) and placed them on a baking sheet.  I put them into an oven set at 450°F and baked them for about 5 minutes before turning them over and baking them for another 4 minutes, or until they began to brown.  Simple and something that I honestly didn’t need to babysit.  I just had to check in every few minutes to make sure I wasn’t burning them.  That gave me some time to throw things into a suitcase…HA.  Granted, I should have done that the night before…but I was busy watching Star Trek – The Original Series.  Priorities.

So…first of all…these aren’t your typical pancakes that you might imagine drowning in maple syrup and devouring for breakfast.  Nope.  They aren’t thin and light and look like something you cooked up in a skillet that morning.  Like I said…these will remind you of a hash brown.  And they are hearty and thick just like hash browns too.  Seriously.  These are amazing.  I loved these more than the previous round of sweet potato pancakes (savory and more of the breakfast pancake type) that I had last week.  These are actually perfect for a healthy snack, a light meal, or a side dish.  Honestly.  But mine…mine were going to be breakfast for my roommate and I.  And after I had them baked up, I served them up with some marshmallow fluff (which I toasted with my kitchen torch) and some roasted almonds on top.  I served them up and settled in for breakfast before finishing up my packing that morning.

Dr. Praeger’s Sensible Foods Gluten Free Sweet Potato Pancakes are AMAZING.  Hearty and healthy is one thing, but these also tasted amazing.  These are made from real food and real ingredients, so nothing tasted off or weird when I dove into these.  I sort of wish I cooked them up with some scrambled eggs and topped them off with a bit of ketchup, but I still have two more pancakes in order to do that with.  So it’s all good.  These have great sweet potato flavor and tasted really good the way I dressed them up.  But when I sampled a piece on its own, that amazing sweet potato flavor just came through.  And that was what I wanted.  Honest.  Real.  Healthy.  Food.  A sophisticated hash brown masquerading as a pancake.  I LOVE IT!  And I loved these.  I sort of want to stock my freezer with them for future use.  Seriously.  If you want an easy and go-to option for your clean eating diet.  THIS…would be my suggestion.

Let’s discuss ingredients.  Real ingredients and real food is what you’ll find in Dr. Praeger’s Sensible Foods Gluten Free Sweet Potato Pancakes.  These delightful disks of goodness are made from sweet potatoes, egg whites, potato flakes, expeller pressed canola oil, brown sugar, arrowroot, and salt.   That’s it.  Amazing.  Clean eating in your freezer!  These potato pancakes are gluten-free, kosher, dairy-free, cholesterol-free, non-GMO, and free from saturated fat and trans fats.

As far as nutrition goes…these are little pancakes of power.  The nutrition stats on the Dr. Praeger’s Sensible Foods Gluten Free Sweet Potato Pancakes wowed me and they will wow you too.  A serving is 1 pancake, but my roommate and I each had 2 this round as it was breakfast.  One pancake will serve you up 80 calories and 2.5 grams of fat.  One sweet potato pancake will also give you 120 mg sodium and 7 grams of sugar.  One serving also provides you with 2 grams of fiber and 2 grams of protein…so filling without being too filling.  Double it to two pancakes, and you’ll be full until lunch time.  Trust me.  I know I am.

I was completely impressed with and blown away by Dr. Praeger’s Sensible Foods Gluten Free Sweet Potato Pancakes.  I’m not kidding when I saw these will find their way back into my freezer.  Honestly, they were beyond what I anticipated and totally captured my attention and the attention of my taste buds.  Delicious.  Healthy.  And amazing.  You can’t beat that.  If you haven’t tried them…do it now.  Next time…ketchup!

Ah…back to one of my favorite things to talk about.

No.  Not food.  Although I do like to talk about food.

Nope.  What I’m about to introduce you to is yet another way that being Celiac/gluten-free doesn’t have to detract from what options are out there for breakfast.  Aside from the natural gluten-free goodness of real foods, such as eggs, potatoes, vegetables, and fruits…there are a plethora of gluten-free breakfast mixes that can help you bake up pancakes, muffins, and scones.  There are frozen waffles, pancakes, French toast sticks, bagels, muffins, cinnamon rolls…the list is endless.

But what really caught my eye a couple of months ago when I randomly dropped into my local Meijer was a new product from a company that I trusted.  The company being Qrunch Foods.  The product – something they call Toastables.

Qrunch Foods set out with a mission, and have since worked hard to carry it out – to create great-tasting, gluten free foods.

Those of us who have made our way through the gluten-free foods out on the market know that gluten-free foods have come a long way.  No longer do you need to fear something tasting like cardboard or wood pulp (although…there are instances this still holds true).  But finding something that stops you in your tracks and makes you go, “Damn…I’d never guess this was gluten free!” is a rare find at times.

Qrunch Foods came out with their line of Toastables back in 2013.  Prior to this, you might have seen and tried (and loved, like me!) their gluten-free and vegan/vegetarian Qrunch Burgers.  LOVE me those Qrunch Burgers.  So, that’s why I didn’t hesitate to pick up one of the two varieties (of four!) of the Qrunch Foods Toastables from my grocery store.  A trusted brand can speak volumes.

My choice: Qrunch Foods Cinnamon-Vanilla Toastables.

Qrunch Foods Toastables are made from ancient whole grains (organic quinoa, organic amaranth, and organic millet) which provides a unique and filling breakfast.  They are, as always, 100% natural and 100% gluten-free.  The idea behind the Toastables is that they are lightly sweetened and go great with any sort of breakfast topping you might enjoy…from syrup to honey to nut butters to jellies to cream cheese.  Whatever floats your breakfast boat.  They look like a mix between a cereal-coated French Toast stick and a hash brown.  I’m okay with this.  And making them is easy too.

Simply pop these into your toaster for a couple of cycles and they are ready to eat.  I was eating these after going to the gym and heading into the office.  This meant that I didn’t have a gluten-free toaster to use.  Other options include cooking over medium-high heat in a skillet for 3-4 minutes per side…except I didn’t have a stovetop.  Luckily, my office does have a taster oven, so I baked these for about 15-20 minutes at 400 degrees until they were nice and warm throughout.  I served these up with a little bit of maple syrup.  Yummy.

I bet you’re wondering how they taste.  Well, they were nothing like I anticipated.  I loved the crunchy outer shell that I got from baking it (and you would too if you baked, used the skillet, or toasted it in the toaster).  If you microwave it, you will lose that aspect of the Toastable itself.  The Qrunch Foods Cinnamon-Vanilla Toastable had a grittiness to it, which comes from the various grains that are used to comprise it.  I’m on the fence on whether I liked that aspect or not.  It tasted a little dry…but the maple syrup I topped it off with helped with that.  The flavor was subtle, but I could definitely catch hints of the cinnamon and vanilla that were incorporated into the Toastable.  It was a quick bite, but quite filling.  Sort of like a dry, crunchy French toast or waffle…which isn’t a bad thing.  I just sort of expected a little more tenderness on the inside.  Although, overall, not bad.  Not bad at all.  Thank goodness for maple syrup!

Let’s discuss ingredients.  The Qrunch Foods Cinnamon-Vanilla Toastables are made from water, organic millet, organic quinoa, organic amaranth, organic refined coconut oil, organic arrowroot starch, organic cane sugar, organic apple cider vinegar, organic vanilla extract, sea salt, organic cinnamon, and organic non-GMO canola oil.  They are not only made with ancient whole grains, but also 100% gluten-free, soy-free, wheat-free, egg-free, dairy-free, and corn-free.

As far as nutrition goes, a serving is 1 of the Qrunch Foods Cinnamon-Vanilla Toastables.  There are four Toastables in each box.  This one serving will give you 120 calories and 4 grams of fat.  This will also give you 135 mg sodium and 1 gram of sugar.  Loving that.  These are cholesterol free and free of trans fat.  You will also be taking in 3 grams of fiber and 3 grams of protein.  So don’t let the size of them make you think they won’t fill you up.  These will hold you for the morning.

So, not an astounding find, but one that does make for a different and tasty breakfast for sure.  It’s easy to prepare…just takes a little time if you are toasting it up in the toaster oven or toaster, but as long as you aren’t famished, that’s not a problem at all.

Dairy-free (and gluten-free) coffee lovers…REJOICE!! So Delicious has done it again.  No surprise…because they are awesome.  Now…this is not new news to any of my fellow So Delicious and coffee lovers…but back in mid-2014, So Delicious Dairy Free put out a small line of shelf-stable coconut milk coffee beverages that are intended to be chilled and then enjoyed by the vegan and lactose intolerant (and even those dairy-lovers) alike.

And, my friends over at So Delicious were kind enough to send me a 4 pack of one of these new coffee beverages!  I. LOVE. THEM.

Anyone who sends me a dairy-free coffee beverages (especially a latte) WINS in my book.  So…even more love to So Delicious!

With every intention of devouring them around the time I got them…life happened.  And when life happens, the best laid plans often don’t happen.  So, this amazing pack of four sat in my pantry…and sat…and I’d think, “I’m traveling this weekend, I need to bring those…” And then I didn’t.

BUT NO MORE!

For the first time in forever, I took steps to remember to bring these little gems on the road with me, by setting them aside with other items I knew I needed to pack up for the journey from Indiana down to Birmingham, Alabama to visit my family.  They made the trip with me (finally) and I put them in my parent’s fridge that evening so they could chill, and the four ladies who were venturing out that morning for some shopping could have a caffeine hit before facing that challenge.

The plan worked like a charm.  That morning, after a good breakfast, my mom, my sister, my roommate and I each grabbed one of the So Delicious Dairy Free Cococcino Latte Chilled Coconut Milk Coffee Beverages from the fridge, gave them a shake to mix, and were on our way.

I was the first to crack mine open.

I was the first to down a bit of it.

I was the first to say, “Holy crap, that’s amazing!  So good!”

I should have said, “So delicious!” HAHAHA!  (Oh, the ways I amuse myself).

So, here is the lowdown.  I have grown to love coffee ever since I was a Starbucks barista.  When I started at Starbucks, I hated coffee.  Everything about it.  But suddenly…I it was my world.  I smelled it.  People asked my opinion on it.  So…slowly…I grew more accustomed to it.  First…the frou-frou blended drinks…then the mochas…then the lattes…then coffee.  Now, I brew a cup for myself at home…no cream…no sugar.  It took YEARS to get there…but that’s where I am.  But when I’m away from home…café au laits and lattes are all that I want from the local and chain shops I find along the way.

The So Delicious Dairy Free Cococcino Latte Chilled Coconut Milk Coffee Beverage has that pure coffee goodness that people who drink lattes want.  You drink mochas if you don’t like the taste of coffee…you drink lattes if you do.  I was, actually, the first in the car to polish mine off (my mom was done first, but I really don’t think she drank hers…just sayin’) because it was just that good.  This bit of coconut milk based coffee goodness is not too sweet and not too overwhelming on the coffee flavor.  My sister loved hers as well.  My roommate said that it was alright, but she’s not a fan of cold coffee (which she says…then orders cold coffee at times…so…yeah…).  It was convenient to have, amazing to try, and delicious in the end.  Totally would buy these and stock my pantry with them for those busy mornings where I just don’t have time to wait on my coffee to brew.  Super tasty!

Now, let’s talk ingredients.  The So Delicious Dairy Free Cococcino Latte Chilled Coconut Milk Coffee Beverage is made from organic fair trade coffee, organic coconut milk, organic dried cane syrup, organic vanilla extract, natural flavor, sea salt, potassium chloride, calcium phosphate, organic guar gum, xanthan gum, and monk fruit extract.  True…there are some…not-so-natural sounding ingredients making these not-so-much a clean eating staple…but definitely a splurge every now and again.  These coffee beverages of coconut milk awesomesauce are always certified dairy-free, vegan, gluten-free, and non-GMO.

And now…nutrition.  Hang onto your knickers, friends.  Because these 11 ounces will fill you up with fewer calories than anything you could get at Starbucks that even remotely resembled this.  A full serving is one single-serve (11 ounce) container.  This serving will give you 130 calories and 4 grams of fat.  This serving also provides 150 mg sodium and 22 grams of sugar.  That…is high, I know.  This drink is cholesterol free.  And, finally, you’ll be consuming 2 grams of fiber and 1 gram of protein.

Breakfast is not only the most important meal of the day, but it is also my favorite meal of the day.  If I have said it once, I have said it 456,793 times (or more)…I. LOVE. BREAKFAST.

And I don’t always even stick to traditional breakfast either at breakfast time.  That being said, you can also find me devouring breakfast foods at lunch and dinner.  At times, I have eaten breakfast food at every meal of the day.  Those are the best days.  Nothing makes me happier than a good, delicious breakfast…at any time of the day.

Lucky for me, this doesn’t always have to mean time in the kitchen.  Now, pancakes are one of the best food inventions in life.  You will find no shortage of pancake mixes, syrup, and toppings in my kitchen.  They are, positively, one of my most favorite breakfast foods to ever exist.  And I LOVE to make them…especially on Sunday morning so that they are hot and ready by the time my roomie decides to get up and join me for some coffee.

And while I think from scratch is the best, I do not scoff at gluten-free mixes and even frozen pancakes that have hit the market.  While Julian’s Recipe has put out a few other gluten-free pancakes in the past (Belgian Chocolate, Blueberry, Buttermilk)…this was their first foray into gluten-free savory pancakes.  And…it just so happens to be made from one of my second favorite things in life – sweet potatoes.

Enter Julian’s Recipe Gluten Free Sweet Potato Pancakes to your grocer’s freezer.  I’ll be honest, I don’t remember where I might have picked these up.  Maybe Whole Foods.  Maybe Earth Fare.  Maybe even Rainbow Blossom.  I might have gotten them from Raisin Rack when I was in Columbus, Ohio…or I might have picked them up at Organic Harvest while in Birmingham, Alabama.  Where I bought them is unimportant.  What is important is how they taste.

On this cold morning, where I am packing to leave for Birmingham, Alabama just before noon…I figured it was a good day to break these out of my freezer and give them a try.  Nothing is more comforting on a snowy, cold, March morning…than pancakes.  Especially savory pancakes.

So…let’s first talk about Julian’s Recipe.  Mostly known for their gluten-filled Belgian waffles and European-style breads, Julian’s Recipe has broken out a line of gluten-free pancakes.  Which, I have never tried…despite myself.  The company is named after founder Alexander Dzieduszycki’s son, Julian.  The recipes are ones he adapted from his own family’s recipes.  And the family tradition won’t stop there as Julian has developed a love of cooking and is often Dzieduszycki’s inspiration and muse for new products and recipes.  So, when they stepped up and began offering gluten-free pancakes…the gluten-free world got to see what all the fuss was about.  In addition to the sweet pancakes (chocolate, buttermilk, blueberry) offered for gluten-free consumers, this new line Julian’s Recipe introduced has three savory options…Vegetable Medly, Yukon Gold, and…naturally, the Sweet Potato ones that I am trying out.

Preparing these are easy.  You can do it two ways…via the oven or the stove.  I love cooking frozen pancakes in my oven, so that’s how I did it.  Simply put the pancakes on a baking sheet and into a 375°F oven for 10-12 minutes.  When they emerge, they will be toasty and warm, and smelling amazing.  I loved these at first whiff.

Savory pancakes are a different beast for sure.  And, my non-gluten-free roomie said that these tasted “odd” to her.  “They don’t taste like pancakes.”  Then again…savory pancakes won’t.  They are good though.  Crispy and golden on the outside with that soft pancake in the middle.  Sweet potato flavor throughout.  We ate ours this morning with some maple syrup, however, next time I might put some marshmallow fluff over them with some pecans and use the kitchen torch…take them to that next level of pancake goodness.  Overall…they were good.  Great texture.  All flavor.

The Julian’s Recipe Gluten Free Sweet Potato Pancakes are made from potatoes, sweet potatoes, milk, gluten free flour (blend of white rice flour, potato starch, corn starch, organic brown rice flour, tapioca starch, xanthan gum), egg whites, whole eggs, canola oil, brown sugar, onion powder, salt, garlic powder, and yeast extract.  These are kosher and gluten-free.

As far as nutrition goes, you are going to love these!  A serving of Julian’s Recipe Gluten Free Sweet Potato Pancakes is 1 pancake.  But because these nutrition facts are awesome, my roomie and I each had two this morning.  Sticking to the serving size though, 1 of these savory pancakes will give you 70 calories and 1.5 grams of fat.  Stay with me…it gets better.  A serving has only 10 mg cholesterol, 150 mg sodium, and 2 grams of sugar.  If you are a carb counter…only 13 grams of carbohydrates.  And, you get 1 gram of fiber and 2 grams of protein per pancakes…so, yeah, doubling up makes it awesome…and filling.

Nothing is better than a breakfast that is delicious, filling, and not guilt-inducing (like donuts or muffins or the like).  While pancakes are not hard to make or cook from scratch, frozen pancakes, especially ones with savory ingredients, are nice to have on hand for those mornings, afternoons, and evenings where you are just short on time, patience, and money in your budget.  Breakfast, lunch or dinner, these new savory pancakes from Julian’s Recipe are sure to fulfill any breakfast or pancake craving.

I know what you’re thinking.  You’re thinking that I’ve been blogging a lot about chocolate things.  Donuts, cookies, donut holes.  And…honestly, you’d be absolutely correct.  I won’t deny it.  I have nothing to deny.  Because, you see, I’m clearing things out.  I’m making better decisions, but, for the sake of my budget and my pride, I’m going through the items I have…devouring them…then replacing them with better choices.

Hence…the massive blogging on all things…totally not good for me.

That being said, I am certainly enjoying each and every tasting thus far.  Because, I won’t lie, I love donuts and cookies and all that stuff.  It is no secret that I have a sweet tooth…and an addiction to all things delicious…like peanut butter.

Now…where was I?

Ah yes…donuts.

Awhile back, I realized that Katz Gluten Free had put out some new donut flavors without me knowing about it.  How I missed this announcement, I don’t know.  So, naturally, I did what any Katz Gluten Free lover does.  I ordered a box of each of them.  And, since then, I have been slowly making my way through them.  The new flavors are all fantastic…and the donuts, as always, are what I expect from Katz.  But…you throw the words Triple Chocolate on there…and…you know you’re going to be WINNING!

The Katz Gluten Free Triple Chocolate Donuts are rich, soft, and gooey (if you warm them up for 20 seconds in the microwave like I do!).  There is nothing a true chocolate lover wouldn’t like about this.  The cake donut is so soft.  I mean, my fork (yes…I eat donuts with a fork…I’m a princess!) sliced right through it.  And it was moist and soft.  Not heavy and dense…and with gluten-free baked goods, that density can be a killer.  This was light and airy and just amazing.  The cake had this rich chocolate decadence to it.  Then, it’s topped off with a dark chocolate frosting…like a smooth ganache.  And…WOW.  Chocolate utopia.  And then…just to add to the awesomeness of this already chocolate-y treat…chocolate chips are sprinkled over the top.  Chocolate euphoria.  It reminded me of the chocolate pudding cake I used to beg my mom to make for me every birthday I had.  Just a chocolate lover’s dream.  I mean…love in every bite.  I’m sad I only have two more days before they are gone from my life.  But…this one was worth saving until last.

Let’s talk about ingredients!  The Katz Gluten Free Triple Chocolate Donuts are made from the Katz Gluten Free Flour Blend (tapioca starch, white rice flour, corn starch), water, palm oil, sugar, eggs, chocolate chips, confection sugar, cocoa, canola oil, baking powder, natural vanilla extract, salt, xanthan gum, agar, calcium carbonate, and calcium sulfate. These are gluten free, dairy free, and soy free.

Now…the hard part.  Nutrition facts.  Nutrition facts on goodies like donuts never look good when put out there.  But…it does help to know what you are putting in your body.  A serving of the Katz Gluten Free Triple Chocolate Donuts is 1 donut.  You might be tempted to eat all 6.  I know I was.  But don’t.  Trust me…don’t.  You’ll regret it in the end.  Stick with one, which…I did.  One donut will provide you with 250 calories and 14 chocolate covered grams of fat.  This one donut will also provide 20 mg cholesterol, 240 mg sodium, and 16 grams of sugar.  It is a definite sugar-laden treat.  Which is why I don’t eat these very often.  And, finally, you will be devouring 1 gram of fiber and 2 grams of protein.  Trust me…this donut will not make you feel full.  I was ready for my snack (an apple, mind you!) at 10 a.m.

Donuts are not evil.  Nope.  In moderation, they make for a fantastic treat.  As I don’t get donuts very often with my dietary restrictions…but when I do, I always hope that it’s a delicious treat that is worth the indulgence.  Let me tell you, Katz Gluten Free always makes it worth the indulgence.  Especially with these.  Triple threat of triple chocolate.  If I revisit any of the new flavors, the Katz Gluten Free Triple Chocolate Donuts will be my choice for sure.

It was a long journey home that day from an afternoon event in Dayton, Ohio.  But, if there is one thing there is always time for, it is a stop into Foodie Heaven (aka: Jungle Jim’s) on the way through Cincinnati, Ohio.  This is one of the most impressive stores you will ever enter.  And you will leave a changed foodie, for sure.

One thing I will hand to Jungle Jim’s…they carry some gluten free products, on shelves and in the freezer, that I haven’t seen anywhere else.  Reason for that – they are often from local Ohio companies.  Love seeing a business help out the little local ones.  For sure.

And, for some reason, that very afternoon, I really, really, really needed to have donut holes in my freezer at home.  I didn’t know this, mind you, until I strolled past the gluten-free freezer area in Jungle Jim’s and saw the little plastic cup that was piled high with the little chocolate balls of cake donut goodness.  Oh…I had to have them.  So…I bought them.  Even though I was doing everything in my power to not purchase items (such as snacks and donuts) on that trip…it happened regardless.  And they made it home and into my freezer…where they remained.

Until this morning.

You see, I’m having a rough weekend.  This is not me being a drama queen.  I really am.  I was supposed to be in Birmingham, Alabama, with good friends of mine, participating in the Mercedes Marathon Weekend.  I knew a few running the half marathon and I was running the full with my training partner, Matthew.  Except winter storms blew through, and while everyone else risked the roads and the weather, I stayed put.  I missed seeing my nephew run in the Kid’s Marathon on Saturday (which meant more to me than anything else), and I’ve just been down and out all weekend.  Seeing my friend’s Facebook feed flooded with pictures of the event hasn’t helped with my mood either.

So it was totally a donut kind of a morning.  And lucky for me…I had a cup full of Sonny Marie’s Gluten Free Chocolate Glazed Donut Holes.

The world might be safe from me yet today…

Sonny Marie’s was created by Christine Coleman, whose son, Danny, was diagnosed with Celiac Disease at the age of 11.  This brought about drastic changes to the family’s lifestyle as they chose to join Danny in his fight against gluten.  It was hard for Coleman to see her son missing out on pizza, cake, donuts and all the other goodies his friends were sharing, which is what inspired her to develop her own donut recipe, so delicious, that even Danny wouldn’t know the difference.  And she crushed it.    Since then, Coleman has worked on expanding on their line of gluten-free products to help others have that “I can’t believe it’s gluten free” moment and not be deprived of the joy of food.

For me…the joy of food this morning was inside this little plastic cup that held 10 little glazed chocolate donut holes.  That, my friends, was bliss this morning.

The Sonny Marie’s Gluten Free Glazed Chocolate Donut Holes are…exactly…as I remember the chocolate glazed Munchkins from Dunkin’ Donuts to taste.  I used to eat the hell out of those, so when I pulled half of these out for me and half for my roommate, I was already feeling better.  They were the perfect size (no skimping) and felt like the perfect density.  After spilling coffee on myself…I returned to finally dig in…

Without even a warmup in the microwave (I let them thaw overnight to get to room temperature), I was hooked with one bite.  Yes…one bite.  First of all…the cake donut was the perfect consistency. Not heavy and dense.  Not light either.  But cakey through-and-through.  So many gluten-free cake donuts are heavy and intimidating…not these.  Not one bit.  The chocolate flavor was rich and delicious and the glaze was melt-in-your-mouth perfection.  Seriously.  Perfection.  I was sad I only had 5 of these to devour.  I probably could have eaten the whole cup on a morning like today.  Good thing I have friends who help keep me from over-indulging on treats.  Oh, but these were so good.  Mighty tasty.  I didn’t even care that my breakfast was mostly sweetness and sugar…and then…I still didn’t care.  Chocolate is a girl’s best friend on days like today…and this one just comforted me.  For the moments of breakfast…I was content.  I even licked the glaze off my fingers when I was done.  Good to the very last bite.

Sonny Marie’s Gluten Free Chocolate Glazed Donuts are produced in her Coleman’s home.  It is even labeled as such.  That being said, they are made in a facility that uses peanuts and pecans, so if you have a hyperactive nut allergy…these might not be for you.  Nuts are one of the few things I happen to not be allergic to.

The Sonny Marie’s Gluten Free Chocolate Glazed Donuts are made from sugar, rice drink, molasses, white flour, mechanically pressed organic palm oil, egg, potato starch, cocoa, tapioca flour, sweet rice flour, baking powder, vanilla bean extractives in water, alcohol (35%) salt, apple cider vinegar, xanthan gum, and cinnamon.

As these are produced at home, I cannot give you nutritional information as none is provided on the packaging.  But, I’d say close to what the Chocolate Glazed Munchkin’s run at Dunkin’ Donuts.  Give or take a few calories and fat.  Hey…they’re donuts.  Indulge or don’t.

My theory in life is…every now and again, you have to treat yourself.  I was having a bad morning…so, I treated myself.  I don’t eat donuts or donut holes every day…but these were beyond worth the splurge.  Sonny Marie’s products are available in many local shops in and around the Cincinnati area, including Jungle Jim’s.  Make the journey…because these are totally worth eating.  I wish I had purchased another cup of them.
